why cant iTunes sync/backup feature to be more like Time Machine? or why cant Time Machine backup iphones/ipod Touch? it would be a good idea and helpful for firmware updates. saving app settings/phone settings.

my problem i encountered with restore from backup after a firmware update, some apps became unusable. for example i helped my brother on his iphone 2g, ran a backup before updating. after update has complete did a restore from backup, his Notes app does not work anymore. all the saved notes have different titles, some cannot be viewed, cant even save new notes or edit old notes. it was bad for him as he had some important stuff. i assumed that is caused by old data/software overwriting new data/software. from my understanding about itunes backup is that it only creates 1 backup file and it just overwrites it each time you perform a backup.
