Before I go off and Tag / add artwork to my DVD I am currently converting I would like to know please; are the Tag / Artwork embedded into the m4v file or are they held within iTunes.

The reason for asking is that I will (when an external 1TB drive arrives) move my moves to a Mac mini which is going to be the iTunes server and I would hate to retag all the movies again.

Many thanks.

I think the tags still stay in you home /Music/iTunes directory somewhere even when the library resides on an external drive.

If you use an app like Lostify or MetaX, the tags are definitely embedded in the files. If you use iTunes to do the tagging, I'm pretty sure they're in iTunes.

This is true. DO NOT use iTunes to tag files. Meta-X is my personal favorite.

Don't use iTunes for tagging. You want to tag the actual file, so if you want to transfer the files to a new computer, you don't have to retag them all.

Get MetaX from here.

First, convert/rip the video to MP4, then drag that file into MetaX, tag it, then drag it into iTunes.

Many thanks for all the help, MetaX is an excellent application and going to save me a lot of time.

Just saw this on the front page, and have a question pls.

Ive spent about 6 months so far tagging my music, with titles, artwork, filenames, compilations etc etc. using iTunes on my iMac

Now Ive read this, please, please, please dont tell me Ive done wrong as I will literally scream and be mad.

What i was planning after all tagging is done, was to move all the MP3s onto a NAS or external drive, and copy them to my other PC a Windows XP PC, so all the MP3s are on there. So I will prob use Windows media player for this.

Now pls tell me all the tags are going to be present when I copy the MP3s over to my other PC?

Please? otherwise Im a goner, I CANNOT do all this tagging again, I done most manually so I got them how I wanted them

ta, here's hoping

iTunes writes the new tag info to the file for music, it is only videos which doesn't get written.

The movies I tagged in iTunes, displays the Artwork that I applied when dragged into MetaX, so it looks like iTunes does imbed artwork but not any other information, but I do stand to be corrected.

My experience with audio files in iTunes is that if you manually add artwork to (at least m3ps) it gets written into each file. However, if you let iTunes automatically download artwork, it stores only one copy for the whole album, and stores it in the library. So it may do something similar with movie files.
