iTunes taken AGES to import Movies

Hi

I wondered if anyone had any idea why iTunes is suddenly taking AGES to import movies into iTunes.

The movies are converted through Handbrake from avi and DVD as the ATV 2 setting. I never used to have any problems until the past couple of weeks?!?

Maybe Apple changed something about how movies are converted in iTunes? I never use iTunes to convert videos. Use Handbrake instead. Handbrake can seem overwhelming at first but the presets work reliably. Another benefit of Handbrake encoding instead of iTunes seems to be that iTunes is not particularly efficient compared to Handbrake.

Do you have iTunes set to copy files to the iTunes folder? That'll slow it down a bit -- how long are we talking?

Yes iTunes is set to copy the file to another drive, however this is the way that it has always been set to do it.

Time wise it takes about 1 minute for the first 3rd of the import then about 10-15 for the final part. Any changes to the file e.g. adding artwork also takes about 5 minutes where as it used to take a second. File size for this example was 350mb.

I import many movies, music and tv shows in itunes and it is not a long process. All my files reside on an external drive. No copying of the files in a separate itunes folder. Only one location for my files. Using an older imac 24 with 1.5tb tv episodes and movies

Maybe you changed a setting so that now every modification is done to the file itself instead of meta-data, meaning that changing things like the year or a poster makes iTunes re-write the whole file every time.

Oh, I understand now. Yeah, I noticed that sometimes when I change meta data within iTunes it seems to take it a while where it used to be nearly instant. Particularly artwork. I have no idea why. However, actually copying an already tagged file into iTunes is still unaffected.

My iTunes does the same thing after a while. It gets to where it takes forever to import movies and tv shows and also if I change any artwork or data for them.

Best thing to do is to reinstall iTunes, and no you won't lose your library. Its even easier if your library is on an external like mine is. Just eject the drive and trash iTunes and then download an dintall it.

I've had to do this twice since I started encoding movies and growing my library over the past year and a half. But doing this will bring it back to normal and will be fast again.
