iTunes thinks i'm a thief (iTunes store problems)

Just a little history. I moved house recently, before the app store was released, and unfortunately have been without internet for about 2 months due to some stupid <BLEEPS> at my local internet company. For this reason i have not been able to authorize my desktop PC on the iTunes store.

While i have no internet at home i've been downloading App's and Music from iTunes store directly onto my iPhone using the Wi-Fi at friends houses. All well and good, all my purchases that i paid for work and my songs play.

However the minute i plug my iPhone into my desktop computer to update my music iTunes complains that i have not authorized the computer and removes all my App's and downloaded music until i do authorize it.

Now i'm left not able to use any apps i downloaded, or play any music. All of which i have paid for. All bought legitly through the iTunes store on my iPhone using my iTunes account and password.

The only thing i can do is plug my iPhone into my laptop, which is authorized, and this (sometimes) fixes my applications, however my purchased music has disappeared.

Why is apple treating me like a thief? Is there any way to stop iTunes from de-authorizing my legally acquired purchases?

you can authorize your itunes account on up to 5 computers. Just go up to store and click authorize computer. Enter your iTunes account info and you should be good.

It looks like the OP can't (or hasn't) connected the affected computer to the internet. So authorization won't work.

It might be inconvenient for him but the OP could take his PC to his friend's house to use the internet to authorize. While this may suck but he has been without home internet for 2 months so I am sure he is used to being inconvenienced by his <BLEEP> ISP.

Or, how about using a dialup connection once (if they still exist in your area), or ask a friend who has a tethering plan to connect his cell phone to your USB to access the internet and viola, its done!

I could try and find a modem, or get a USB 3G modem (none of my friends have one), but i just don't understand why iTunes is removing the programs and music just because the computer i connected to was not authorized. It doesn't haven't to copy the files off or back them up, i'd be happier if it didn't do anything to them!

What does the computer i connect to have to do with app's or music i purchased through my phone?

You have an iPhone, right?
Even though this may be a hassle, you could jailbreak it and install PDAnet (a tethering app) and use your EDGE connection to authorize.
If you need any help with jailbreaking, I can be of assistance.

I can tether my iPhone and use it on my Macbook. My desktop is a PC and I tried a few times to tether this up to the phone but was not successful.

However this isn't the point, why is iTunes de-authorizing these things in the first place?

Talk about heavy DRM! So you purchased things via your iPhone but can't put them into your computer because you need to authorise them? That sounds fair, iTunes needs to know that you are the owner of the stuff so you'd need your iTunes Account to verify.

However, I'm amazed that iTunes has de-authorised everything until you authorise your PC! I would have thought it would just not let you transfer the purchases. De-authorising is crazy - I'd be on the phone to Apple/iTunes Store help demanding an explanation as to why people who will be without internet access on a computer will be penalised in this way.

Funnily enough the music i downloaded that has been 'locked away' is iTunes+ content. I thought the whole point of iTunes+ was that it wasn't DRM locked...

I think i might return to getting my music through other means.

Plus that's not the point, there should be no reason why iTunes is disabling the content i purchased.

What does iTunes on my computer have to do with a song i purchased on the phone? Yes i know it backs things up, but can't it either not back it up (leaving it enabled) or back it up in a way i can't access (leaving it enabled).

This is very strange. Are you sure they're actually 'plus' songs? You're correct, it shouldn't be an issue for those songs. I can't explain this.

I'm sure they are 'plus' songs because i took them off using SSH (jailbroken phone) before hand because i was worried iTunes would do just this. They play away fine.

But yes, all that aside, please start buying MP3s from the Amazon store.

Fair enough, but then in the time it's taken you to start the thread and respond to it, you could have sent Apple an email or called them. Not that the thread isn't useful as well, it would just be another avenue to try (and would be interesting to see what they say).

I think iTunes is trying to verify that the applications on the phone are allowed to be transferred to the computer. I think the only way to keep iTunes from removing the music is to not actually sync it with the computer till it is authorized.

I hadn't tried PDAnet before. I assumed it was the same as netshare but to my surprise it is much much better. Used it to get my computer authorized but i've lost my music. Definately time to get onto apple!

Where are my songs gone!!
