I bought a used iPhone 6 and I can't get it to connect to iTunes. When I plug it in I get the error message "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone “iPhone” because an invalid response was received from the device."

I tried booting the phone in recovery mode and doing a restore but when I try that I get the error message "This device isn’t eligible for the requested build". I've tried following articles online but so far nothing has worked.

Any ideas?

What IOS is on it and do you have the latest version of iTunes installed?

Yes, latest version of iTunes is installed. Phone came with iOS9 something and I upgraded it to 10. Wasn't working with either OS.

Yup, tried different cables, different USB ports.

Another interesting thing is that this is the 2nd iPhone 6 this is happening with.

What about Antivirus software.....
Could be also a problem with your WIFI, so if you are connected that way, try restarting the router.

No antivirus software.

Also I just realized I don't have the most recent itunes release. My version is 12.2.2 and maybe there's no further release as I'm still using OS 10.7.5

I downloaded the firmware for 9.3.5 and used recovery mode to install that. It now works fine and connects to the computer no problem. HOWEVER if I update to iOS10 then it no longer works. And I need to update to iOS10 because my backup is from iOS10 and won't work with iOS9.

Any ideas??

You just need to update iTunes. The latest version is 12.5.1.21

Ah so I guess iOS10 is not compatible with OS10.7 then as iTunes only goes up to 12.2.2

It shouldn't work like that......you did check iTunes for update?
I don't own a MAC, but all I know is, whatever Windows version I had, iTunes was always updating to the latest version...
