I don’t believe so, last year I tried to and was told that the system wasn’t set up to do that. You had to use the return kit.
One piece of advice when doing this — take a photo of the shipping label before you drop it off for shipping. Last year I didn’t do this and for some reason it didn’t get to its destination on schedule, I got a message that if it wasn’t received by a certain date my CC would be charged. The post office couldn’t help me because I had no info to give them. The phone arrived at Apple the next day and they sent me an email that greatly relieved me, but a simple photo of the box with the shipping label readable would have helped.
