I opted into the Apple upgrade program last year for my wife and I (not the AT&T version of the program). We both have the iP7. While my wife will probably be happy with the iP7s, I will probably look at getting the iP7s+ or the iP8 (depending on prices).

A few questions about the upgrade program I have:
  1. Should we be able to preorder through iUP? I remember upgrade program users having nightmares just trying to place an order when the iP7 came out.
  2. Can you have the new phone mailed to you if you are upgrading, or do you need to physically pick it up?
  3. How do you return/exchange the old phone? By mail or in person?
  4. Does returning the phone essentially wipe the slate clean on the existing contract & just start a new 20 month contract over again with new pricing of the new device?

I signed up for the program the first year and last year upgrading was a nightmare, existing IUP customers were only able to reserve store stock for in person pick up and trade in while new customers could enroll and pre-order normally. Hopefully they implement a new system so that we have a chance to reserve a phone this year.

You can do the upgrade online this year and mail in the old iPhone with a trade-in kit. As long as you're not on T-Mobile.

Yup, they send you the new phone first and then you send the old one back.

will they do this with pre-orders though?

i asked Apple chat, of course they couldn't give an answer before the announcement. probably a mistake to ask them in the first place lol

I don't see why they wouldn't. They allowed enrollments in the IUP last year for pre-orders, it should be no different for upgrades.

The above comment is true. And being not able to upgrade online for T-Mobile customers is one of inconveniences T-Mobile customers have to pay.

I’m on T-Mobile
Then you cannot upgrade online via Apple. You only can do the upgrade via T-Mobile pre-ordering system which has been terrible for years. Good luck with that.

But I’m on the IUP so it’s different for me. Last year I had to reserve to pick up at a store hopefully I’ll be able to choose to have one sent to the store rather than pick from allocated stock

Thanks for all the replies. I'm hoping that they worked out the bugs after last year and I especially hope that justinf77's reply above is the case for upgrades.
