Just curious - why can't someone purchase a sim-free phone on the IUP? Is it just a way to keep it to 1-per-customer? The loan isn't through he carrier, and everything deals with Apple directly. As far as I can tell, the carrier isn't really involved.

Likely due to the financing requirement, less chance for customer to make one payment and run when it is tied to an active cell phone account. Though still could happen, just risk lowers the risk.
