Ive messed about with my iphone and need to rectify it!

basically ive tried to amend a theme because i didnt like the sounds it made and the lock slider etc etc. anyhow it didnt go according to plan and little things like the search bar says search_bar_placeholder instead of search and when i have 20% or 10% battery life it says somehting sillly like 2387384753% battery life remaining as a pop up....and on the springboard calendar icon im missing the date on the icon.

so what i am hoping to do is start from fresh but unsure of the best way of doing it. should i just reinstall redsnow or restore from itunes?

thanks

I think you'll need to restore the phone, but then you will have a problem because you will only be allowed to restore to 3.1, and you can't jailbreak that yet.

RedSn0w doesn't restore the operating system files so I don't think running that will help you.

That's correct, you will only be able to restore to 3.1. If you get the message that you can't restore to 3.0 again, then you will have no choice but to upgrade to 3.1 now. You can try to add the following to your hosts file...

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

It will fool iTunes into thinking it is contacting Apple to verify which firmware you are restoring to and it will allow you to restore to 3.0 with no problems.

Search Google for how to edit the hosts file if you don't know how. It's very easy. The above may not work though if you haven't had Cydia store some info about your phone a while back.

thanks for the reply

ve edited the host file and i still get the same message in itunes:-

the iphone could not be restored. the device is not eligible for the requested build.

OK well, that will only work for people who got certain things saved by Cydia before 3.1 came out. You have no choice but to restore to 3.1 now. There is no way around it.

Wouldn't disconnecting the computer from the Internet let him just restore to the current firmware the iPhone has/the Mac has saved? And does the "hold shift then press restore to choose a firmware to restore to" thing not work anymore?

It is no longer that easy with the 3GS iPhone as Apple no longer signs 3.01 and 3.0 versions. Simply turning off your internet will only make iTunes wait and wait and wait until you do have a connection again. It will not restore without being able to contact Apple and it will verify and only allow you to restore to 3.1 They really have changed things now since 3.1 came out for the 3GS only.

yeh ive really shafted it :D

i put it into recovery mode and now its stuck!....downloading 3.1 as we speak and try to restore to that?

You can but for now there is no jailbreak for it and if you upgrade now, you will never be able to unlock it.

If you have an extra iPhone to use, I would use it and turn off your 3GS now until the firmware can be jailbroken without upgrading the baseband,

how bizarre. i plugged it back in and now it works, didnt even need to type in my PIN.

now ive got to this stage is there anyway of removing all things cydia and start fresh? right now even things like winterboard, bossprefs and themes arent under installed packages in Cydia so i cant remove them

how frustrating...

I got my 3gs refurbished with 3.1 on it. after tinkering now i have 3.0.1 jb. so it is possible.
