My Apple TV constantly crashes!

A year later, I purchased a brand new replacement Apple TV in case it was a hardware fault in the first unit, but that too does the same thing.

In particular, it hangs randomly, sometimes during regular playback, at other times whilst in screen saver photo mode.

Different versions (take 2 / take 3) make little difference, although I ended up scrolling back to Take 2, because software version 3 made the crashing frequency much worse.

Sometimes it crashes, and then reboots by itself, other times it just freezes forever, until you pull the power. There are times that it won't boot up at all - flashing a hard disk icon with a ? to question life - but then later it will boot up again fine.

Sometimes it can work fine for a couple of days, other times it will crash every 10 minutes or so.

I thought it might be a design fault because the unit gets really hot, and whilst it tends to be better after it has been unplugged for a few hours and cool, that theory is also thwarted because it is known to crash even when cold.

I have lost count of the number of times I have had to pull the plug out of the back, then plug it back in because it has no on/off power button. Putting it into sleep makes no difference whatsoever, as the unit remains powered on permanently. Pulling the power out after use makes little difference.

I've even resorted to cracking it open and replacing the IDE 2.5" HDD, but the same symptoms exist with both the original Apple OEM HDD, as well as the new HDD with a fresh Apple TV image installed.

So... all in all... I conclude that the Apple TV is a fundamentally flawed product that is not fit for the purpose it is sold.

Despite searching the internet high and low for answers, to date I haven't come across anyone with the same list of grievances. Am I the only person with these problems, or can someone shed some light on what I am doing wrong, or why both units have been so flawed and buggy for me?

It would seem that getting two defective units would be statistically unlikely (but not impossible). I assume you've done a factory restore? Have you tried using another computer's iTunes library as the sync library? Do you have anything on top of the ATV? Is it sitting on metal? Not sure what's happening, just trying to cast a few ideas....

same here!

Hey,

Wish I had a better answer for you but mine does the same thing! Had it for about 10 months now and I'm debating taking it to the "Genius" bar. If it's idle, it crashes and restarts prompting me to do diagnostics. I do, and it always says nothings wrong.

My other problem is that it often drops the network connection. I know it's not my router as it works fine with my airport express that is rooms away. ATV is only 5m away and can barely make it through a full movie.

As you said, sometimes it's perfectly fine but others it's practically unuseable :(

I hear ATV 2 is coming out soon....gee, I wonder why???

I've had two ATVs since they were released and although there was a period with one of the sw releases 3.0 that I saw a number of crashes, with the other releases including the latest, I don't see any.

One thing I do is ensure that it gets lots of cooling. I don't put the ATVs in the cabinet with the other components, I put it next to the TV on top of the cabinet instead.

Therefore I wouldn't call them fundamentally flawed, although I do agree that your ones are flawed in some fashion, making them unusable. It's just not a fundamental issue since the majority of folks don't have those issues.

Cheers, Ed.

I am still up in the air. I want to get an AppleTV; but maybe it would be better if I got a Mac Mini. But then again, I keep thinking AppleTV2 should be out soon, maybe January. I guess I could wait.

What do you guys think?

maybe it would be better if I got a Mac Mini.

Mac mini is definitely better from a hardware point of view, but the interface doesn't suit the big screen as well (imo). Appletv does win in the able to control with a tiny remote kind of a way.

You could hold out for a revision, appletv has been out for a long time...

The problem with the Mini is that it only has a single audio port.

Right - that wouldn't work for me. I need an analog audio signal to feed my receiver's "Zone 2" amplifier, as well as a digital signal for surround sound. I wonder if there's a way to split out the optical and analog signals coming out of the single port.

Can't you get a USB audio card?

like this?

or this?

Both have USB in, SP/DIF and analog outs. Maybe?
