My Apple TV constantly crashes!
A year later, I purchased a brand new replacement Apple TV in case it was a hardware fault in the first unit, but that too does the same thing.
In particular, it hangs randomly, sometimes during regular playback, at other times whilst in screen saver photo mode.
Different versions (take 2 / take 3) make little difference, although I ended up scrolling back to Take 2, because software version 3 made the crashing frequency much worse.
Sometimes it crashes, and then reboots by itself, other times it just freezes forever, until you pull the power. There are times that it won't boot up at all - flashing a hard disk icon with a ? to question life - but then later it will boot up again fine.
Sometimes it can work fine for a couple of days, other times it will crash every 10 minutes or so.
I thought it might be a design fault because the unit gets really hot, and whilst it tends to be better after it has been unplugged for a few hours and cool, that theory is also thwarted because it is known to crash even when cold.
I have lost count of the number of times I have had to pull the plug out of the back, then plug it back in because it has no on/off power button. Putting it into sleep makes no difference whatsoever, as the unit remains powered on permanently. Pulling the power out after use makes little difference.
I've even resorted to cracking it open and replacing the IDE 2.5" HDD, but the same symptoms exist with both the original Apple OEM HDD, as well as the new HDD with a fresh Apple TV image installed.
So... all in all... I conclude that the Apple TV is a fundamentally flawed product that is not fit for the purpose it is sold.
Despite searching the internet high and low for answers, to date I haven't come across anyone with the same list of grievances. Am I the only person with these problems, or can someone shed some light on what I am doing wrong, or why both units have been so flawed and buggy for me?
