iWeb with CVS or SVN or something for non-iWeb server?

My mom maintains a website using iWeb. She saves it locally and then "manually" uploads the entire site to the server every time she updates, because it's Dreamhost and isn't integrated like .mac or something.

Now, I use CVS and SVN for updating web applications like Wordpress that just updates the changed files.

I was wondering if it's possible, feasible, and "normal" to set up a CVS system where she can update the server's files using CVS, taking them from her computer? Seems like that would make things easier for her.

If that's a good idea, how could I set that up?

The problem with iWeb's publishing is that in order to publish it to a non-.mac site you generate all the HTML files regardless of if they were updated or not, so CVS or SVN will just notice that the mtime has changed and will push them upstream.

I used iWeb for a short period of time because I was too busy to do a site for myself, but I would highly suggest moving away from iWeb. It's only useful if you cough up the cash for a .mac membership.

Oh, poo. Well thanks, that answers my question!

Yeah I tried to get her on to at least Dreamweaver, but she had trouble getting used to it. I write all my markup by hand so I'm no help.

Ugh. You're trading one nastiness for another. I've yet to use the latest version of Dreamweaver, but I was never crazy about how it would facilitate collaboration through simple file locks. Talk about stone-age. Maybe they finally got off their butts and put a real versioning management system in.

Really, what you have to do is sit down and write your own HTML by hand. Most of these WYSIWYG editors really just complicate things. You don't learn the markup language, you just learn an interface by whoever you happen to be buying from.
