I would just like to say that I got Jaguar and I just installed it on my 500mhz iBook with a 8mb rage 128 video card and 384mb of RAM and all I can tell you is... WOW! It makes me feel as if I were on a fast G4! The only problem I see is that scrolling is still not as good as it should be like in OS 9 and menus are still slow, If apple were to just speed that up I would be VERY happy. iChat is VERY nice software too, I think it will be a big hit.

This is how fast jaguar is on my iBook 500mhz!
System Prefs: 1 1/4 bounces
Quicktime 6: A little less then 1 bounce
Sherlock: A little less then 1 bounce
Mail: 2 1/2 bounces (Mail has a LOT of new features)
Internet Explorer: 2 bounces to get to the splash screen, It takes about 3 bounces to get to the browser window.
Preview: 2 bounces
iChat: 2 1/2 bounces to start up all the way

I would also like to add that the new finder window zooming effect is very nice.

If anyone would like a screenshot for any app in jaguar, just ask! (Also, The screenshots at spymac.com are real!)

Are those bounces you're referring to cold bounces? Or had you already launched and quit the application measured... it makes a difference. Take IE. It takes longer on a cold launch than if you were to quit it and launch it again.

How did you get Jaguar, its not even out yet. And I would like some screen shots, if you could email me at swahilibill@yahoo.com that would be awesome thanks.

There's some versions floating around on HL, but I'll just wait and be surprised when July/August rolls around. :) There's screenshots of 10.2/Jaguar everywhere.

is it too much to ask ya if u could play with the preferences in iChat and see every which way that stuff can be displayed? (with pics of course)

I know its not released yet, I am using a pre-release version (6C35). I got it from a friend that burned it on 2 cd's (The first cd is a jaguar install cd and the second is a cd with some extra apps on it such as itunes, imovie, ect...), I will post some screenshots later of Jaguar as soon as I get something to host them.

a setting in the energy saver panel that i am finding very interesting is the Processor Speed setting.

can anyone with the beta tell us what this is actually supposed to do??

maybe turn off speed stepping??

Here are some screenshots I JUST took, These are only of things that are new in Jaguar that I haven't seen floating around on the web...

Pic Removed Because Of Apple!
Pic Removed Because Of Apple!
Pic Removed Because Of Apple!

These are all hosted on my iTools account, Get them while you can, I bet apple will pull them soon.

Hemingray-The apps were opened before, But then I tried cold bounces and most of the apps came up just a little slower, only about 1/2 second slower though.

Jaguar does seem to have some bugs in it, I found a way to crash the finder and not be able to recover from it by highlighting a lot of things on the desktop and then getting info on them and then repeating this a few times and the finder will crash, Also I am getting LOW memory warnings! And I have 384megs of ram with only 1 app opened... I guess there are still many bugs that need to be worked out....

I just played with energy saver... Its got killer power managment, You can optimize your system for things such as DVD playback, Presentations, Highest performance and longest battery life! Also there is an option to turn the processor to "normal" speed and to "highest" speed, Really cool. (Even in normal speed it still feels MUCH faster then 10.1 and you are saving a lot of power!)

Jag is installed on my G4 400. To me, it's still slow, although much better than 10.1. Unfortuantely, I still can't use X...I just have too many things always open, and when i click on a window, I want it to come to the front..not 5 seconds later. It looks like we're going the right way though. Some of that might come from my ever powerful Rage 8 meg video card, and my pci ati card. Who knows, but definitely the right direction. As far as iChat goes, I think it's super cheesy. I'm a hardcore AIM use, and the buddy list setup is ridiculous, impossible to see all your friends online without scrolling and scrolling trough it all. Also, takes up a ton of proc usage (so does AIM though). Also, the speech bubbles are just #*&$& ugly and stupid. Haven't played around too much with it, but we definitely need a better internet browser. Tried some of the release candidates from omniweb and mozilla, but still nothing like IE on 9. I am excited though to see another few months work on it, coupled with a nice ddr dual proc powermac @ mwny, should be nice!

I don't know why you think it takes 5 seconds to bring a window to front... Its instant on my iBook 500mhz, Just as fast as OS 9 and you can even close windows in OS X when they are not in front! This is one of the few things that got me to really like MacOS X.

iChat, AOL, Proteus

i have mixed feelings about the Chat apps. on the market today, i use AIM every day and i enjoy the AOL version best, they have the best buddie list format and i like the overal apperiance, i dislike the ads tho. iChat is for one the #1 buggiest app. i've ever come accross also the buddie list needs some serious work, i like the mac.com mail aspect of it being a mac.com user. i also lothe AOl but want to comunicate with my friends its a paradox. i also downloaded Proteus from the OS10 downloads page it is the worst of the 3, the buddie list sux and i cant get it to play a sound when i get an IM it plays fine when i send one tho.

Bounces

The application opening speed sounds impressive...

This is just great... 'Bounces' is a new unit that will very soon be standardized, and PC users will have no idea what Mac users are talking about...

"Have you tried out Photoshop 8 yet?"
"No I haven't, have you?"
"Yes, it's very impressive! Only 2 bounces to start up"
"2 bounces??? Whoaaaaaah!"
:D

You're missing out. Adium is hands down the best AIM client I have ever used.

automatic wallpaper changes...

Here's one for you, icetraxx...

...from what I've read, you can set the Mac to automatically change it's desktop picture periodically under Jaguar. Now, I'm also told that you can set this so low that the picture can change as often as every 5 seconds, and that on computers with enough graphics chip to handle it, the transition between pictures is the OpenGL crossfade!

On Macs that don't have enough graphics chip, it just plays the changes as a slideshow, no crossfading.

Can you confirm this? When your iBook changes the desktop picture, is it crossfaded?

Mark.

Nothing like that in the WWDC beta. Sounds cool (yet kind of pointless) though.
