I just bought MSN for iPad which works well. Now I have real MSN not those push services through 3rd party servers.
One problem though, if I hit home button, the connection lost. I guess this is because of no multi-taksing issue of iPad. I asked their support, was told it will be running background after OS 4 releases.

So for now, if I wish it to run in background, will jail break my iPad help? Anyone tried? I jailbroken my iPhone once and didn't see any different so I switched back to official OS...

Thanks.

You do realize you need to download apps from your jailbreak (usually cydia) to take full advantage of jailbreaking? But yes, if you Jailbreak, you can download a thing called 'Backgrounder' which enables you to run an app in the background. So in your case, you would just open up your MSN app and hold the home button, which then activates Backgrounder. You can just quickly press the app agian, and it will pick up where you left off.

The only downside is, it burns battery life. I had it on one of my apps on my iPhone 3G and forgot about it...2 hours later my phone went from 100% - dead...

Wow, this is kind unacceptable. Don't want my battery dies too fast. Maybe wait for new OS is the only way to go.
Thanks for the info.

I think that you got told some incorrect/simplified info here. iOS 4.0 does not allow Apps to maintain any old network connection forever as can burn a significant amount of battery life. I think that the way Apple expects IM Apps to work is still that they should use Push Notifications. What iOS 4 will allow is for you to quickly switch back to an IM App and have it be in exactly the same state as you left it.
