Okay so if I went to the apple store today and paid either $500.00 for a new 3G or $700.00 for the 3GS at full retail price. My question is since I'm buying it at full retail price and it wont be activated through AT&T will I still be able to easily jailbreak either one i decide to buy? I already have the purplera1n program downloaded to my mac...

a guide?

can anyone recommend a good guide for unlocking/jailbreaking the 3GS? the dev blog site is getting more and more cryptic (for me) as the process gets more technical. redsn0w, yellowsn0w, pwned, firmware, basebands argh!

Is it really that easy? So I unlock it, put a T-mobile sim card in and i am on my way!!!

Okay so $700.00 is alot of money to be dropping on a phone!! Is it worth it (3GS)? and thats not including tax....

Why would you need a guide to jailbreak a 3G with Purplera1n? All you do is plug your device into your computer and click make it rain. :p

Just to be 110% certain... this process - Redsn0w then ultrasn0w - will work with the 3GS? I too find al this talk of basebands etc a tad confusing :( The reason I ask is that the text Mac tutorial for Ultrasn0w doesn't mention the 3GS

I'm looking at buying a pre-pay iPhone from O2 (UK carrier) and using with an Orange SIM - anyone got any experience of doing this with a 3GS?

Also assuming that there are advantages of doing this before 3.1 comes out to the public..?

Thanks

Definitely you need to do this on 3.0, as 3.1 will break it, at least temporarily.

When you get the phone, jailbreak with RedSn0w: http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11&seid=2 (choose either Windows or Mac tutorial here)

Then unlock with UltraSn0w: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

You'll need to put in the Orange settings for Web and MMS in Settings, General, Network, Cellular Data

Also, check out this Dev Team blog entry: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/133799347/your-3gs-temporary-solution

I'm in the US next week where no doubt a pre-pay iPhone is cheaper.

I've looked on the Apple site and the AT&T site but can't find any mention of a pre-pay 3GS phone.

Are they available in the US, and if so I'm assuming that other than the power supply they are the same as models sold in the UK and are jailbroken/unlocked the same way and will work with any UK carrier?

Thanks

Oh no...

I've gone to downloaded the Firmware that the step 1 says to download and place in the Pwnage fodler.

The link provides a .zip file. When I extract the .zip I get a 'normal' folder. I don't get the 'package' with the same icon as described in iClarified, and I can't navigate to it during the Restore process.

I'm doing this on a Mac

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Perhaps try changing the extension from .zip to .ipsw

I've done it in the past, but we should wait for an additional conformation.

Can someone else verify this?

just done that the downloaded file ended .ipsw.zip

I deleted .zip and got the right lookingicon and was able to select it when attempting the restore.

But when I selected it I got a an error message saying ""the iphone xxx couldn not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible"

Thinking this might be because my iPhoneis fresh out of the box, with 3.0 and not been jailbroken before (iClarify say in this case I may not need to restore anyway) I went to redsn0w, selected the ipsw file but then get an error message in redsno0w saying"Unable to recognise specified ipsw"

Should I perhaps try it on my PC instead?

All good - needed to upgrade to latest iTunes! Doh.

All up and running - Orange SIM in O2 pre-pay iPhone.

Ideal :)

Just got to make sure it's set up for 3G data...
