My wife upgraded her 3Gs to the 3.0.1 firmware. Can this be jailbroken? I have JB'd many, many 3G phones but I am getting conflicting info on the 3Gs v. 3.0.1

Thanks!

Where are you getting conflicting info? Get your info from the source:
http://blog.iphone-dev.org

You can jailbreak 3.0.1 on a 3GS, I've done it just fine. :)

I read that there were some files you were supposed to grab off your iphone first to keep to be able to jailbreak after upgrading the 3Gs 3.0.1

This seems to not be the case though???

Did you read that from the Dev Team's website?

Future jailbreaks (perhaps 3.1 and greater) may need your iBEC and iBSS files to be captured. If you need to do so, go here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4400

This does not apply to 3.0.1, right on the Dev team's main page:
"Short version:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock."

I am currently on 3.0.1.....Do I need to capture iBEC and iBSS files before I start the jailbreak (using this http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4447) OR are those files available only for people currently on 3.0 looking to upgrade to 3.0.1 in a jailbreak?

If so, it appears I need to restore to 3.0 and then to 3.0.1 jailbreak

*points up* I posted some info previously. :)

I asked several questions there. Which are correct? I'd like to see your write up. If I dont capture these files is my phone unjailbreakable from here on out? Seems to be getting a bit complicated. Maybe I should skip out on this.

Ok, I'll bite and hold your hand...

Do you need the files to jailbreak 3.0.1?:

That was posted by me previously, I also linked to the Dev Team's site which should be your main source for any jailbreak information. :)

Thanks for holding our hands, we do appreciate it - really :D

I have the 3G and I have used this method with no issues, but I am going to try it on my wifes 3Gs - do I still point hers at the 3.0 that I used? It would seem that the 3Gs would use a different IPSW because of the different things it does???? Am I incorrect on this??? Do I just use the 3.0 that I currently have saved??

Yeah, i'm not wiping my perfectly set phone yet until these questions have been answered.

See? Conflicting....this guy is saying to use the 3.0.1 firmware and not the 3.0....can anyone that has jailbroken a 3Gs running 3.0.1 give me the correct info?

Point redsn0w at the 3.0 ipsw. I have a 3gs and have done about 5 others this way. You'll be good to go.

*jumps up and down*

Yes, hi, me. I've been giving you this info the whole time....

Hahahaha....thanks man!!

I said that because I read it on the iClarified link I gave

"** If you would like to jailbreak on the 3.0.1 firmware you can follow these exact instructions; however, in Step Two use this 3.0.1 iPhone firmware file instead of the 3.0 one. Continue with the instructions as indicated.**"

That's the 3rd paragraph down on the site. Sorry if it's not right but it's what I read

The Iclarified site does say to point it at 3.0.1 - I just tried JB'ing my wifes 3Gs and I pointed it at the 3.0 ipsw and everything went ok - redsnow uploaded first stage, then second stage then I got stuck at the waiting for reboot screen on redsnow - we waited, and waited, and waited.....I finally had to just unplug it and hold the home/power button to get the iphone to boot up - no JB.

I think I read somewhere here about people that got stuck here also - I need to research that a bit - wish me luck...if you have a tip I'd sure love to hear it.

I am having a problem jailbreaking my 3.0.1 3GS as well. I followed the tutorials, pointed redsnow to the 3.0 restore and it looks like all is well. The iPhone reboots as if everything is done, redsnow says it is done. However, when I unplug my iPhone, I look for Cydia and its not there. I specifically made sure the 'install cydia' was checked as well. The only thing I did not do was do a complete restore before I started. Do I need to do a complete restore even though I already have 3.0.1 installed?

Thanks.

I have the 3G and had the same problem. Unplugging the device leaving for a second or two and then plugging the device back in solved this problem.
