Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak? Please...need your feedback!

Hello all,

I have an iPhone 3G that I have been relatively happy with, but I am really aching to jailbreak (because I love modifying/hacking all my devices). Having said that, I have stayed away from jailbreaking because I heavily rely on my iPhone for work.

Few Questions:
- Does VLC with divx/xvid work on the iphone 3G? I have done some research on the web and most places state that it is in the works but the it doesn't fully support it today.
- Is there an alternative mp3 player other then the build in iPod? I hate iTunes and any excuse to use it less would be a blessing.
- Will Jailbreaking my iPhone effect the stability of it's primary functions (Phone, PDA, etc)

I did the deed on mine about 3 weeks ago. I love the ability to customize the look and the apps not available on the iTunes store.
As far as function goes, I did notice a slightly longer lag to open certain applications such as address book. For example, it's taking the restored phone 2 seconds to bring up the address book whereas with the jailbreak it would take 4 or 5 seconds.
I've heard on here that running many different themes and tweaks in Winterboard can slow your phone down, so I tried to get rid of most of my tweaks to try it out. It did help somewhat. I also noticed the lag when opening Safari, Facebook, and the iPod. I'm sure many on here will dispute this but these are my findings.
I think that if you rely on the iPhone for work, you might want to stay away from jailbreaking. Perhaps I'm just naive but the hacks available by jailbreaking have not been approved by Apple for a reason. I'm not saying they're justified in every rejection from the App store, but it could be because they make the iPhone unstable in some way, shape, or form.

1. They work ok, not very well though.
2. There are other ipod programmes, but they still require itunes (ie Tunewiki)

Honestly, my iPhone 3G has (in my opinion) been snappier after I jailbroke it than before the jailbreak. I just made my first theme and I had a really great time doing it and I love the way it looks. I say go for it!

The lags caused by customizing (they are NOT caused by jailbreaking alone) shouldn't be enough to scare you away from jailbreaking. Even if you keep the mods to a minimum you're going to notice some difference in speeds of opening apps but it's not going to make you any less productive unless your routine relies on seconds.
