Jailbreak problems upon new firmware

Hi guys


Been loving jailbreaking my 3Gs so far - lots of very cool apps!

I have, however, only had my iPhone for like a month and have therefore been using Firmware 3.1.2 all the time!

What i wanted to ask you is if there usually are any problems with this Jailbreaking stuff, when Apple release a new Firmware - and you choose to upgrade to that one?

Will some of the JB apps stop working until a new version of that app has been released?

What about general stability problems with the iPhone software having Jailbreaked it and then upgrading the Firmware?


Hope you can share some experiences from past Firmware upgrades and how that worked out!

Once a new firmware update is out and you update using itunes you will lose all your jailbreak stuff and will be left with the stock Apple software. No stability or any issues caused because of your prior jailbreak.
You can either go with the official update or wait for a jailbreak to be released for lets say firmware 3.2 for example. Then update your phone and rejailbreak and reinstall all your JB apps/addons.

Yes, major firmware updates do result in some Cydia apps no longer working until the developer (hopefully) updates the app.

Seems like a pain in the ass, but how time consuming and annoying is it really - for those of you who have tried it?

EDIT: I just recently bought and installed PKG Backup.. Can that be used to "auto install" all the Cydia apps after a Firmware upgrade too?

There is a paid app, PkgBackup, which will re-install all your JB apps (but not the settings). It costs like $3.50 and works very well.

Yes, it can, provided that you have synced your contacts after you created the backup.

There's also aptbackup which is free... it doesn't actually save all the apps but it creates a list of installed apps in cydia and allows you to mass install everything all at once... I haven't actually done a wipe/restore to see how well this works yet though, but it is free.

AptBackup ruined my newly JB file system the only time I tried to use it. I do not recommend it.

Use PkgBackup. There is a whole thread on these 2 apps here in this forum.
