iPhone jailbreak question

i have a iphone4 and i jailbroke it the first day with jailbreakme. i have never upgraded my ios and im still running 4.0 well now im trying to upgrade and i cant figure out how to do it. it wont even let me restore my phone to factory settings through itunes it says the firmware i have is not compatible.
so my question is how can i upgrade to the from 4.0 to the newest version.?

i should also add that i dont care if its jailbroken or not. its just most of the apps wont work unless i have at least 4.3

make sure your itunes is up to date and try a DFU mode restore. (search in google if you don't know how.) Also, do not use the "Update" button instead use the "restore" button.

Are you trying to install current firmware (5.1.1) or older firmware ?
Does your host file point to Apple or Cydia ?

I've tried the dfu restore and got the same thing. I haven't tried the new iTunes tho.

Yes I'm trying to get the most recent firmware I can. Most of my apps won't work cause I'm running such old firmware.
I'm not too good with the jailbreak stuff that's why I did it with jailbreakme, it was simple. All I had to do was slide the slider and click ok. The only reason I did was I like to change my brightness,wifi,Bluetooth from the lock screen.

Is there an easy way to upgrade my firmware with jailbreak?

RedSn0w will also allow you to update without iTunes to a new jailbroken 5.1.1 fw.

Just hook it up to iTunes and click restore.

i tried this and got the error msg stating the firmware was not compatible.
it wont let me restore it at all.

ill google redsnow and absithe and see if i can get that to work.
whats the sites for those downloads?
