Jailbreak Question

Hey, i had a quick search around and have a few questions about jailbreaking my iphone,

Basically i bought my iphone from 02 on the release day and i am currently on the iphone contract, im happy to stay on it, however i would like to use third party apps ect.

would i be right in thinking that if i jailbreak it wont affect anything on my phone like my use of the edge network, and my phone will run the same as it was before but with the added ability to download and install 3rd party apps.
