Jailbreak questions

hey guys. I never did a jailbreak and I want to give my father my old iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1.2. The reason I want to jailbreak is because he can't afford a data plan because he lost his job but he loves the phone for calls and texting and for wifi using. My questions:
1. What sites are legit and for this purpose?
2. Can he still use App Store to download typical free games or is there another way?
I understand 8.1.2 is new and may not be out yet but if you can give me some legit sites to keep my eye out? I found jailbreak pro but is that legit?
any other tips for the no data plan aspect of steps to follow?

I'm confused as to why you think you have to jailbreak? Get a plan with no data (I think they exist?) and just use the phone. He can still do everything with the internet when wifi is available. He can download free (or paid) games from the App Store.

TaiG is the official jailbreak for 8.1.2. The site you posted is not at all legitimate.

Your reasons for wanting to jailbreak are unclear. Your father doesn't need a jailbroken phone in order to not use a data plan, and in fact, I can't think of anything available jailbroken that would make doing so easier. Find a prepaid call & text only plan with no data for him and he'll be set, assuming the phone is unlocked for use with different carriers. (You cannot unlock an iPhone 5 via jailbreak, if that's what you were planning.)

That article is 3 years old. Also, it's talking about unlocking the phone which cannot be done anymore through jail breaking.

My sister gave me her iPhone 3GS for Christmas in 2011. I used it until I got my iPhone 5 on WiFi.

Using Google Voice and iMessage I had calls, SMS and iMessages covered. All free, all on WiFi. This was not my main phone. I did this because I'm on Sprint and the 3GS was AT&T.

I did all of that with the phone stock. I jailbroke it later on for other reasons, but not because of this.

I have no idea what the article has to do with not being able to use the phone on WiFi.

If you can't or don't want to use GV there are plenty of other apps out there that do phone calls (Skype for instance). Hell, even the FB Messenger app will do calls.

So…the point is, jailbreaking is unnecessary for any of this.

It briefly mentions unlocking via jailbreak (presumably via ultrasn0w or SAM), which was doable for some iPhones at the time this article was written--but even then, their unlock link talks about the 3, 3gs, and 4 on iOS 4. The information is badly out of date. And swapping sims from a dumbphone as they mentioned is also out of date, since nowadays all the carriers that require a data plan have excellent detection and will add one to your bill when you try that trick.

To the OP: eyoungren has detailed your best bet, which is to leave the phone stock and use a VOIP setup. FYI, if you want to dial out without using phone plan minutes on a Google Voice number, you'll need to use the Google Hangouts app, as the regular Google Voice app uses cellular signal for calling nowadays and therefore uses your voice plan.

Jailbreaking has nothing to do with having an iphone with no data plan.
If you're on post paid account and your carrier mandates a data plan then you cannot go around them detecting what device you're using on their network.
Jailbreaking will not do anything for that.
If you want a phone with no data then use it on a prepaid service or contact your carrier for further details on what you need to do and if you can avoid it.
Stay away from JB, its not for you or for your father.
