So I haven't used a Jailbreak since my iphone 2G, and I'm considering using it now, because I'm getting extremely bored with the plain springboard/sms tones. I'm wondering if I jailbroke my phone, added winterboard (if that's the best solution now, it's been a year since I've used Cydia) and the app for sms tones, would I experience an unnerving slowdown like I had on my 2G? I currently have a 3G, so I think it would run a little faster.

I have no need for customizing things like the keyboard, just the icons/background, so I'm thinking I should be OK, I would just like some input from people who have experienced it.

well since i have a 3GS and i feel like the 3G and 2G are EXTREMELY SLOW. Even not jailbroken.. so it will be slow no matter what

There will be some lag with winterboard installed, but of course it will depend on what you are modifying. I like you, only wanted small modifications. some icons, background. I did not need all the other stuff winterboard could do.

I gave up on my 2G and 3G and don't use winterboard. I got tired of the lag on opening the SMS app and other apps. Some people can't but I could tell the difference on both my 3G and 2G.

If you really want to change some icons, sms tones and the like.
A little more work is required.
I SSH into the phone and change icons and sms tones. winterboard just takes the extra work out of it, but does use some (althought slight) resources.

I find and icon i like form anywhere and change the name to match the one I want to overwrite. for instance biteSMS, not so OK with the Pink Icon. I found a messing type bubble on the internet and copied it over to biteSMS folder and renamed the image to match what biteSMS had and respringed my phone. no pink icon. Of course do a back up of the original just in case.

I have Winterboard installed but I only installed to change a few stock icons, not complete themes. I also included a couple of other things like Five Icon Dock and SBSettings and I haven't noticed any lagging.
