I have NOT updated to 1.1.3 at all.

I know it was possible with 1.1.2 being downgraded to 1.1.1 to get apps. I did that. I followed all the steps from the gizmodo video tutortial. I went through each step, including the OkToPrep file. after spending all of that time doing all of that, the final step in the video before running jailbreak on the computer, is/was having the iphone connected with Itunes open, and HAVING to hit "update to 1.1.2" in Itunes. BUT, that's before 1.1.3 update was available. I tried tricking it, and updating it with a 1.1.2 restore file, but that didn't work, even though I hit UPDATE and NOT restore.

so now I just restored it back to 1.1.2.

I am guessing that the only way to accomplish the final step (when you have to hit update to 1.1.3) will only work when there is a jailbreak 1.1.3?

Ah I never thought of how that would effect the jailbreak. I think that Update literally just updates the files, leaving your music and settings in tact but with a Restore it wipes the memory clean and starts again, wiping the Oktoprep file with it :/
Sorry to hear that

yeah I thought so too. even though I tried using the 1.1.2 restore as an update file.

if there was a way to download a file that is ONLY a 1.1.2 update and NOT a restore, then I can finally go through that final step I guess.

I should have decided to jailbreak earlier before this dumb 1.1.3 came out.

Haha, well once the 1.1.3 jailbreak comes out you'll be ahead of the game ;)
Im afraid its gunna have to be a case of waiting for that jailbreak to arrive though :/

gahh, I hope it comes out soon. I was so antsy to finally downgrade my firmware. I was hesitant about it, I don't know why. I didn't want to unlock it, just add apps, so I don't know why I was super nervous. I know restores can fix anything.

I wish that I would have fast forwarded to the end of the tutorial when he showed updating to 1.1.2 in itunes. I would not have wasted 2+ hours figuring out the downgrade, since it was all useless anyway.

oh well, I'll just keep my 1.1.2 for now.

hm how did he have the option to update to 1.1.2 firmware and not 1.1.3 in Itunes?

is it because I have the latest version of Itunes?

Im not too sure. I think what they meant was holding down Option when clicking Update, much like the way you do Option-Restore when downgrading to 1.1.1

oh wait, I said I did hit OPTION on my keyboard along with the UPDATE button. and I clicked on my 1.1.2 restore file. but it just restored it instead and erased all my jailbreak downloads and put me back to where I started. it's a restore file, it didnt read it as an update even though I did NOT hit restore. if there was a way to download a 1.1.2 update file, then that would probably work.

Oh right, sorry ;)
But AFAIK there's no way to manually download the 1.1.2 update file. Up until this point there was no need due to 1.1.2 being the most recent version. A google search may turn up some results however

hm yeah I've tried. I've only found 1.1.2 restores so far, no actual strictly-update file.

agnespie, I'm in EXACTLY the same boat as you! I didn't know 1.1.3 was coming out yesterday, so I finally decided to give the jailbreak and SIM unlock a try. I had 1.1.2 and went through the instructions in the n00bs guide. I got AppTapp installed and guess what comes next. Yep. Letting iTunes update you to 1.1.2. DOH! If only I wasn't so ignorant and read through the instructions again (even though I'd already read through it three times in the past couple months). Well, I'll be keeping my eye on this thread and others for a solution. Let me know if you find something. Until then, I wonder if I should stick with my jailbroken 1.1.1 phone that won't let me use the phone features, or if I should go ahead and update to 1.1.3. hmmmm....

my opinion is, don't update to 1.1.3. the new features don't seem that great at all, especially compared to jailbreaking and getting 385435435 3rd party apps. I think we should just sit tight and be patient.

also, you said youre stuck with 1.1.1 now? why can't you download the 1.1.2 restore file and restore in Itunes by hitting option (or shift on PC) + restore and pointing to the 1.1.2 file.

Because if I do that, it'll erase all of the jailbreaking I did, right? I just needed to update it so I can keep my iPhone jailbroken and make the phone functions work. If I'm gonna lose all the jailbreaking I did, then I'd rather just update to 1.1.3.

Any form of upgrading, downgrading, or restoring loses all your 3rd party apps...

After reading through a TUAW article about how he's trying to jailbreak 1.1.3 I came across this

This may help you if you are still wanting to update to 1.1.2

FYI, she (Erica Sadun) is one of the most prominent iPhone hackers out there, and has literally written dozens of apps...might be polite to at least call her by the correct gender ;)

In another post, she noted that once you upgrade to 1.1.3, even if you successfully downgrade to a previous version you won't be able to use the phone functionality any more. Erica talks about that here.

so wait, sorrycharlie. youve never actually put 3rd party apps on your phone yet, right? you were just like me, and just recently tried to do it amnd almost completed the process but couldnt because Itunes only has 1.1.3 as an update, and not 1.1.2, right?

really, the first time doing jailbreak took me a whileeee to figure out (maybe little over an hour), and I was disappointed knowing that I could not complete one of the final stages: udpate to 1.1.2 on Itunes.

but now when I think about it, doing it all over again will seriously take what, maybe not even 10 minutes? I know exactly how to do it now. so, restoring back to 1.1.2 is really the only best option here.

restore to 1.1.2 and use your phone regularly. we just have to be patient for a jailbreak that will work with a 1.1.3 update in the final step.

After I found out I couldn't update to 1.1.2 anymore, I did start installing some 3rd party apps like SummerBoard and the NES emulator. I just can't use the phone features, so I have to use my old Samsung SYNC phone until I can get my iPhone to work with my SIM card again.

Haha, well I wasn't sure, ya know with all those American 'girls' names being used for guys, eg Alice.
Accept my apology ;)

same boat.

soo, it looks like I'm screwed?

I just bought an iphone yesterday (was waiting till after the keynote) and after sifting through the endless literature out there on hacking the phone, determined that I needed to jailbreak the iphone so that I could use my current AT&T sim card that is currently in my samsung. (I don't want to activate with AT&T because (1) afraid of commitment and (2) AT&T said that they do not allow iphones on business accounts so I'd have to give up my corporate discount.

The iphone I bought came loaded with 1.1.2 so i downgraded to 1.1.1 and everything was going fine until I found out there is no option to upgrade to 1.1.2 in itunes. Thus, I'm left with no iphone for now.

Anyway, just wanted to rant a bit and hope that someone can offer some help.

Thanks!

It's good to know that we're not alone. :)
