Ok so I kind of stuck my foot in my mouth when I told a co worker that I would help him jailbreak his phone so that he can unlock it. I work in a nice Accounting firm and want to be liked lol JK. I used to have an android and I rooted it, flashed roms on it all the time. I figured this would be similar, Im good with technical stuff, and I dont mind helping people.

But as I grew further into researching on how to do this, I am realizing its a little more complicated than I thought, nothing I cant handle though.

I just want to summarize my knowledge, and if anyone can tell me if I am in the right direction that would be great.

Alright, so..he has a 3GS 4.3.5 firmware with new bootrom..(baseband I dont know right now because it is in my work email). From what I understand is that you have to downgrade to firmware 4.1, install redsn0w, jailbreak, and than install a ipad baseband (6.15.00) so that you are able to unlock it later with ultrasn0w!

What I dont know or am not familiar with is The Firmware Umbrella and SHSH blobs or something.

Can anyone give me a hand :p In the meantime I will keep researching. Thanks guys in advance

Bahahaha this is hilarious. Unfortunately, I don't know the steps to jailbreak an iPhone 3GS by memory, but you have the right idea. However, you cannot downgrade to iOS 4.1 unless you have the SHSH blobs for it.

Also, it's highly advisable that you DO NOT do the iPad baseband unlock unless you do further research on the matter. There were instances where the GPS wouldn't work anymore and other bugs that came with installing the iPad baseband. You need to let the original owner know of these risks.

Finally, if the iPhone is from AT&T, you can easily unlock it by using an eBay unlocking service. Just pay up, send them the EMEI of the phone, wait a few hours until they tell you to restore the device (you don't really have to) and you're good to go. If you friend asks, just tell him it's a secret so you can be a ****ing boss.

That's some funny situation you got yourself in though. Lol

Yah tell me about it LOL. But I must help him now bahaha. Ok so ... SHSH blobs? What the hell are those? :p Ok so I know a little about them...hopefully they aren't as silly to work with as the name sounds. Also I will tell him, I have read up on the gps etc... is there another method?? For him to get unlocked without downgrading basebands?

LOL your hillarious, but no unfortunately hes not from At&T!!

If he's the original owner and if the 3GS is with ATT, all he has to do is call ATT and tell them he wants to unlock it. It can't possibly still be under contract, therefore ATT will unlock it.

They'll confirm that it's his, and they'll set the unlock in motion. Takes a few days, he'll receive an email that it's unlocked.

The instructions will say that you have to restore the iPhone, which will update the iOS.

The other easy method is to go on eBay and search for iPhone unlock. You can do some research on these forums for the most reliable vendors. Some do it for as little as $5, takes mostly just a few hours.

Either way, it will be permanently unlocked.

Well first things first, get TinyUmbrella, and get any of the SHSH blobs you can get, either with Apple's servers or from Cydia. This'll let us know if you can downgrade or not. It'll also help if you supplied us with the baseband of the phone, that way we can figure it if it's necessary to do the iPad baseband.

0.5.16.02 is the baseband. And the firmware 4.3.5 as I said earlier!! :p
