When we get a final jailbreak, is there any chance we can get something like AirVideo for iPhone/iPad so that we can stream MKV (or pretty much anything we want) by letting the computer do the transcoding?
Also... Nintendo emu?

I don't know about a nintendo emulator, but I would assume we would see some sort of transcoding app, as there is already one in the App Store (Plex).

Best you can hope for is a Jail Broken App Store on the ATV. But Plex, Air Video, and many others will probably wait for the official app store instead of risking pissing off Apple and putting their App in the Jail Broken App store.

I do believe that Apple will come out with an Apple Store soon after 4.2 is released....

emulator is very possible. as ATV has bluetooth and most of the JB emulators use bluetooth to use either an iphone as a controller or a wiimote.

I don't understand how Apple will create an app store. As far as I can reason there won't be an OFFICIAL app store.

First of all there is no harddrive right? So the 8GB internal is used for caching, OS, and what not. I doubt they would create an app store, so you can use some of that harddrive for apps. First it would maybe at most be 5GB. And thats smaller than the first iPhone's size... seems like a step down.

Ofcourse jailbreakers probably won't mind to create an unofficial appstore.

all I want is a way to stream any file from any network location. jailbreaking should be able to do that. all the other stuff is fluff.

There was a 4GB iPhone ;)

I thought the 4GB wasn't "made" for apps though. It didn't come till the 3G(?) I know the 4GB could support apps but it wasnt made for it.

Either way its a step down. And with apps being compatible with TV, on average, be larger as they would have larger resources to support higher resolutions.

You will need very little storage for Apple TV apps. I would guess less than 500MB of storage and that is being high, so 8GB is more than plenty. Most storage on iPhones are used for music, photos, and video, which will not be stored on an Apple TV. Remember also apps would be limited to remote input only so only very few games would ma,ke the jump, I think most apps on the AppleTV would be limited to video and music clients which again consume little space.

My iPhone is only 8GB. If anything you should be able to put more apps since nothing besides the OS and and a little bit of a buffer for movies is stored.

I would expect to see a Facebook and Twitter app no doubt. With the remote app typing is easy. A web browser would be easy too. As for size, 8gb is plenty. Many iPhone apps are under 20 mb anyway.

I think there's opportunities for so many different things. Emulators, Torrent apps. Any software that runs on the ipad or iphone could theoretically be adapted to the AppleTV if it can be changed to use a remote control type interface rather than a touchscreen. I am hoping for flexget and deluge or transmission to be ported. That would seal the deal for me, and I'd get two of the new ATVs.
