Can someone clarify something for me please . . . . ?

What exactly is 3G and why would I need it?

I ask because my daughter has unwittingly upgraded to 2.2.1, and as yet we haven't unlocked the iPhone.

What problems do I now face?

Thanks.

Links to threads explaining this issue would also be appreciated!

Thanks

you my friend are screwed unless you go into a contract. yellowsnow which is a program used to "unlock" the iphone doesnt work with the latest baseband, when your daughter upgraded the baseband upgraded to (02.30.03) whuch yellowsnow cannot unlock (yet) till the devs can crack the baseband your gonna have to wait :S

OK thanks guys, I get the picture!

I've stressed many times that my kids don't do any upgrades to their equipment (PC's/Mac's etc) without my knowledge, and now maybe they'll listen.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'll keep checking back in the hope someone will be able to offer a solution in the near future.

A steep learning curve (and an expensive one if the iPhone's buggered!), but one worth the effort.

Regards.

The iphone is fine, you just won't be able to use it on a carrier other than AT&T. An unlocked phone means you can use it on another carrier.

Did you already have that iphone in use with AT&T??

No . . . actually it was registered with the O2 network in the UK!

Same thing I guess though . . . . still won't be able to use it on any other network until a new crack is developed to break the baseband coding!

Any idea's what will happen if I try to jailbreak the iPhone with the 2.2.1 update?

Will it be able to at least "phone out" using another sim card, or is it all networking which is prevented from working - telephony, email & internet?
