A friend of mine has a factory unlocked 3GS with 3.1.3 firmware and, I'm assuming, the latest baseband. Reading this iClarified tutorial would suggest that it is possible to jailbreak his phone with a Mac but he doesn't have one. So my question is, if I make a custom ISPW for him using my Mac, can he then restore his phone using Windows and this custom firmware. And if so, does he need to use DFU mode or can he simply click on the custom file and restore? I should add that it isn't feasible for me to do the job for him as he lives many miles away and I'll be sending him the custom firmware on a CD by mail.

It is not possible to jailbreak an iPhone 3GS which already has 3.1.3 installed because 3.1.3 eliminated the USB exploit used to jailbreak the 3GS. If your friend has his 3.1.2 SHSH saved (usually this requires that the phone previously have been jailbroken), it should be possible for him to downgrade to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak. Otherwise there is currently no way to jailbreak his phone on any platform or using any software. Sorry.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to answer this query for me. On this basis perhaps iClarified should clarify their tutorial as it doesn't make any reference to the 3.1.3. gotcha. I'm checking with my friend to see if he has actually updated to 3.1.3. I had assumed that he had but when I think of it he did refer to using a tethered jail break using Blackra1n that was very inconvenient so perhaps he's still at 3.1.2. Having just a 3G myself I haven't been faced with these problems!

Thanks again

BlackRa1n.com, and just do a Google search for the older iPhone OS (3.1.2). They have it hosted everywhere. :)

Presumably if Blackra1n works using 3.1.2, then Pwnage would also work using 3.1.2? And if so, if I make my friend a Pwned custom restore 3.1.2 on my Mac, what does he need to do to use it under Windows to restore and jailbreak? Does he need to use DFU mode? Or can he simply use 'Shift' and restore and browse to the custom file and use it as normal?

You cannot downgrade the firmware of the iPhone 3GS. This is why it's recommended to get your SHSH's "on file" with Cydia so that you can get the firmware signed by Saurik instead of Apple, allowing a downgrade.

So no, if he's on 3.1.3 he's not going anywhere.

No, no, no. Blackra1n does not work on 3.1.3, and it is not possible to downgrade a 3GS to 3.1.2 without saved signature hashes. Please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about.

So is the iClarified tutorial for jailbreaking a 3 GS on 3.1.3 which I linked to in my original post completely wrong? And if so how come it is still there as it seems to be a reputable and well informed site.

Only if the 3GS is JB already on 3.1.2 and doesnt have a tethered JB. Then you can updated to custom pwned 3.1.3
Not if its already on 3.1.3 or has the new iboot.
They explain the process but not what state the iphone has to be in to qualify for the tutorial.

Thanks, Applejuiced, now I understand (I think!), although it would have helped if iClarified had made that clear in their tutorial. But my friend says that he is currently using Blackra1n in a tethered jailbreak with 3.1.3 which seems still to contradict the advice given here so I'll go back to him and get further clarification of what the actual situation is.

I think your friend is full of bs :D

if that is true

George Hotz the one who wrote and found the exploit for Blackra1n would be interested. Since he has stated himself you can't use blackra1n on 3.1.3! he also says 3.1.3 is a worthless update! ;) only created to remove the JB's of 3.1.2

Your friend is mistaken. It is not possible to jailbreak a phone at 3.1.3 with blackra1n. Just not possible.

Thanks everyone for making things clear. Not having a 3GS myself I wasn't really up to speed on what was and wasn't possible so I appreciate your replies. (My own 3G is safely kept at 3.1.2)
