Hi, I am hoping someone will be able to help me. Yesterday my boyfriend bought me and iphone which is locked onto O2. I am Vodaphone and understanding there are a few things I need to do before I can use it on my network. I have been searching the net all day and have come across redsnow and ultrasnow etc. I have a few questions before I give it a whirl.

1. Do I need to activate my phone with an 02 sim in order to install firmware 3.0 if its not already on my phone (seeing as there is no way to check the firmware without turning the phone on I guess yes is my answer)

2. I downloaded 3.0 firmware for redsnow to use but there was no ispw file do I need to rename this file from the original zip file name?

3. Can someone suggest a good guide for me to follow step by step to get my phone jailbroken and unlocked. I’m not very technical and can just about follow instructions. So the best way and easiest way would be key!!

Thank you all for your help, I appreciate you must get questions like this all the time.

Rozie

Sorry that would help wouldn’t it. It’s a brand new phone. I am running Windows XP.

I have found some fantastic guides on iClarified which answered most of my questions. I will use my other halfs 02 sim to make sure the firmware is 3.0.

Another question, does redsnow automatically install the 3.0 firmware or will I need to do that via Itunes before hand?

Using redsn0w you would update to 3.0 using iTunes FIRST then run redsn0w after the install. Redsn0w will then hack the firmware and I think you don't even have to reboot the phone when it is done-though it is always a good idea ;)

Thanks for that, I take it http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4301 this tutorial is the whole process I have to follow, the installing firmware 3.0 via Itunes etc.

Are there any benefits of unlocking the phone before you activate it? I just figure it will be easier to unlock the phone by using Ultrasnow and running the app through the Iphone which obviously can only be done with a Sim in it??!!

Thanks again.

I don't know how O2 works, in the states iTunes HAS to activate the phone, so you can't actually unlock it until after you activate it. If you don't have a sim in the phone when itunes restores the software it stops at that point until you put the sim in.

Just as a heads up if you activate the phone without a legit O2 sim with purplerain/redsnow, your push notifications might not work..its a known problem but other than that just follow the steps enigma said

That tutorial will do the jailbreak. Assuming that the model of phone is a 3G, then after that you need to unlock with UltraSn0w, this way:

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C97d Safari/528.16)

Just out of curiosity, does being a "chick" actually affect the jailbreaking process (since the OP made a point of mentioning it) ... ? I wasn't aware that it did.

LOL! I like that she admits it. Most of the women I know are too "cool" to do geeky stuff like this. My wife wants the JB and unlocked phone, she doesn't want to worry about how it gets done :)

I don't know. I only got to the second sentence where she said she had a boyfriend. :)

Ok, what i suggest you do i plug in the phone with the o2 sim inside and activate the phone (using iTunes). Once this is done, update to firmware 3.0 and then Jailbreak using Redsn0w. Once you have been jailbroken, download Ultrasn0w using Cydia and enjoy your connection to Vodafone.

Hope that helps.
