Hi folks,

I have fallen in love with Spotify.app and now would like to jailbreak to enable backgrounder.

I have heard of various problems with Jailbreaking, and have thus never considered it before.

Does jailbreaking still lead to a big slow down? Any other incompatibilities, problems?

What is the best site for jailbreaking these days?

Many thanks,

Dan

How'd it go with the Jailbreaking, do you still get Push Notification?

Did you jailbreak your current iPhone Software, did you have to re-set everything up i.e. email, apps etc....

I really want to Jailbreak to enable Backgrounder my self but don't think I can handle re-setting up my little iPhone, let alone not get any Push notifation's ever again...

Jailbreaking 3.0 does not require a restore at all. Additionally, jailbreaking only disables push notifications if you did not legitimately buy/contract/activate your iPhone with AT&T.

Oh dear! Well I have made a true newbish mess of this!

First I did (unnecessarily) wipe the iphone and restore a fresh copy of the OS - following the online jailbreak guides. This wiped all my apps. :-(

Naively I thought a standard backup would save app settings. :-(

Jailbreak with Redsn0w went fine. But then I opened up Cydia on my App-free iphone. Installed one soliatary app (The Maps tweak) and Cydia hung on installation - rebooted and now my iphone will not boot up.

Iphone hangs on the white "boot" apple. have tried all recommended methods to get to DFU mode to reset it, but none of them have worked. Help!

Phew! Running REdSnow again managed to get it to restart - now it is jailbreaking for a second time.

Second time lucky..... :-O

"Jailbreaking is easy and trouble free" Hmmmm.

Edit: Spoke too soon, jailbreaking got stuck on "Waiting for NAND to appear". I reset and now stuck on the apple boot screen again. Sigh...

(And all because apple will not activate Background apps. Grrrrr...!)

I was just about to Jailbreak mine (I'm downloading the IPSW files...) I think i might hang off for a little bit...

Now iphone is stuck on a black screen - not even a boot apple. Progress? :-(

Wait! IPhone detected in recovery mode!!! Go on Itunes - restore that mother....

(Is this kind of cr*p common when jailbreaking or have I just been unlucky).

Restore worked fine and now I am jailbreaking again - 2nd time lucky...

You are unlucky, or just not following the directions. Not to be insulting, but Redsn0w could not be easier. The iPhone Dev Team makes these applications nearly idiot proof. No one should be turned off from jailbreaking because of one persons bad experience. And, as you've found, sometimes you just need to play around a little, if you encounter an error. I have a jailbroke 3g, and if you are cognizant of what JB apps you are putting on it, you wont notice much of a slowdown at all.

I have never had any of your problems. It literally takes me 15 minutes tops to jailbreak and I have done it for tons of ppl.

As far as slowdown goes. I always have anywhere from 32MB to 57MB of free ram. A "backup" only back ups sms, emails, settings, etc. As for apps and music you have to do a normal sync.

Gah! Unlucky me! I think I cancelled Cydia during its initial setup phase as I wanted to enable wifi. That may well have corrupted Cydia's settings. Now the restore and re-jailbreak has proceeded smoothly and my Iphone is jailbroken and happily running backgrounder. :-D

This has been a useful learning process!!

I'm also a newb when it comes to jailbreaking. The only time I tried, I think I made the same mistake as you. I followed the guide which wiped all my apps, contacts, etc. I think it was from installing a fresh copy of the OS.

How would you do the jailbreak without wiping everything? Just skip that step in the guide?

I would use Iclarified's tutorials. I use them and have never lost anything. I follow every-step. It's pretty fool proof imo.

People start reading the directions and it says to install a fresh update of 3.01. Simply because that was written when the average phone had 3.0...If your phone is already running 3.0.1, you can skip that step. Simply dl the 3.0 version and start the process. No need to wipe you device like the OP did.

Note: The experiences of this thread starter are not typical! Not to be disrespectful, but you probably should have had someone else walk you through this. Never a problem for most of us redsn0w users!

Haha - yes, I guess I was rather unlucky! All working wonderfully well on the second attempt.

Backgrounder and Unrestrictor are the only jailbreak apps I am using, but they are phenomenally useful, and I am very happy to have them!

I do think iClarified et al should update their guides to emphasis that the restore is not necessary with Redsn0w. It really isn't very clear in the current guide.
