Id prefer pwnage if I had a mac.

blackra1n worked for me, but it was after trying it 6 times on 2 different PCs

I tried Blackra1n for PC once last night on my 3G with no success. Had it stuck at running... and my iphone was stuck at screen with cord and itunes logo, no slide bar at bottom. Had to do DFU and full restore from backup. Going to try again tonight as I didnt see all the crap about turning off itunes programs (ipodhelper.exe, etc.). As a first time jailbreaker though I have a few questions. Will I still be able to load all my "legit" apps (free and paid) from itunes? I can always restore back to factory firmware and settins through itunes correct (in case a genius visit is in order)? I'm excited to experience the jailbreak world and all the phone has to offer that Apple and ATT turned off, I just don't want to brick my phone and shell out 300 bones for a new unit. TIA for the help!

I had no problems with blackra1n for my 3Gs, also it didn't delete any files on the phone and didn't need to do a restore or backup.

Had no problems with blackra1n. Took about 35 seconds for all my jailbroken goodness. I also jailbroke with purplera1n when i was on 3.0. I never have had a problem with geohot's programs. Running a 3gs on 3.1.2

Main difference between the two....

Blackra1n doesn't preserve the baseband.
Pawnage...does.

What are the benefits of preserving the baseband??

Thanks,

If 3.1.2 is already on the phone it makes zero difference. It only benefits those who haven't upgraded to 3.1+ who still have the older baseband (which is unlockable).

Use Pwnage, has been around longer and more throughly developed, comes from the respected iPhone Dev Team

Google George Hotz... He's pretty respected. In fact he was THE FIRST person EVER to unlock an iPhone. He knows what he's doing.

Same thing I was going to say. :D I'd just use BlackRa1n because it's faster if you're already running 3.1.2 rather than restoring to a Pwnd ISPW.

Blackra1n also doesn't require a restore and can be done from an iTunes upgrade.

I know who he is, but that doesn't make him the best. Also, just because he wrote something doesn't make it good. Pwnage has been around and throughly developed. Blackra1n, not so much and is new...

Reports are that Blackra1n is much more smoother though (less crashes and snappier). Just what I've read.

I was referring to the fact that you alluded that the Dev Team is respected and he is not. I didn't' say he was the best at all but it's silly to say the Dev Team is respected and suggest blackra1n is any less valid because GeoHotz is just as respected.

I never said that nor did I imply that. You implied it on your own. What I said was a comment as a fact. If I were to mention GeoHot, it were to be a kid who hacked into the iPhone and came up with neat results. That said, he deserves his respect, but I don't think his tool is up for it.

Although his skills to determine holes in the system are great.

Also, I have had better results with the Dev Team's tools so far... last time I tried something from Geohot, it ended up in disaster... mind you, I know what I am doing with my iPhone.

Happy?

Whatever, not going to bother arguing semantics over the internet.

I have actually only used Dev Team Tools myself and cannot comment on the stressfulness of the other tools. I've been on a 3G and I used whatever tools where out first. Usually Pwnage. I haven't upgraded to 3.1.2 though but I will probably use Blackra1n if I chose to because I don't want to restore my phone again.

You could just as easily say the Dev Team is a bunch of kids(young adults) who hacked the iphone.

The dev team wouldnt be where it is today without geohot.

Actually, you might want to back that up because I can show you were all the current exploits (1st Gen and 3G) they did it on their own.

This is true. Dev Team has used their own Exploits. There is no dobut that the fact that so many people work on jailbreaking the iPhone and collaborating has contributed to the quickness of iPhone jailbreaks.

I think the one point to be taken away from this is that Chronic Dev, iPhone Dev Team, GeoHotz all are respectable sources and have all done a lot to help people out for little to no gain.

I think we can all agree on that. The most popular is definitely the Dev Team and their reputation serves them well. They are known for releasing VERY stable versions of their software that runs almost like it was made by Apple itself. The other teams tend to be more quick and dirty (In the case of greenpois0n... maybe not quick ;))

Just in case you have the same results tonight, you DO NOT have to restore if you come to this point. Just doing a hard reset will get you back to where you started.

Will I still be able to load all my "legit" apps (free and paid) from itunes?

You probably should have done a little research before diving into this, don't ya think?

Wellll,

I just got another new 3Gs yesterday (after my last one self-destructed), which came with 3.0 on it. Ran pwnage tool 3.14 which requires firmware 3.1.2, and it worked like a breeze.

...except, I have no connectivity to AT&T anymore (as much as I hate them, not having any cell service isn't a step up).

Hm.

Edit:

This probably stems from the fact that I can be a dumbass at times, and as such, had it create a firmware that was pre-activated (hey why not...)...

i r dum.

so dum.
