jailbreaking iphone 3G and warranty issues

Hi there, Am thinking of jailbreaking my iphone 3g mainly so I can use it as a modem to surf on my laptop, however I'm told that jailbreaking voids the warranty, however if something happens to my phone and I need to take it back to Apple can I not just let it sync with Itunes thus unjailbreaking and gaining my warranty back?...sounds simple to me but wondered if there is a way apple would know you've jailbroken it?:eek:

Well unjailbreaking your phone doesnt really give you back your warranty back because once you tamper with it, it's voided and apple can see if you have jailbreaked it they just wont bother with it cuz its too technical. But yes you can just restore it back to its original state can cuz I did the same thing you are talking about so I can return my phone to apple for a new one due to dust issues and they just looked at it and gave me a refurb one no questions asked

Yes, if you restore back to a stock Apple firmware, they will honor the warranty again.

Technically speaking there will be traces of jailbreaking in the deleted file system, however forensic knowledge and time will be needed to check this. Apple will not look at this as it is WAY too time consuming and a majority of their staff may not even have this know how either.

I fixed it for you. ;) A sync will not touch the jailbreak. You would have to update or restore the iphone. I'm sure that's what you meant though.
 
I have read that Genius's do have access now to Diagnostic Software that allows them to easily see if an iPhone/iPod has been ever jailbroken. Whether they would use it or not in every single case is another question.

They can only tell if you've jailbroken if you actually show up with the phone jailbroken. Just thought I'd clarify that.

Most of the Geniuses out there don't even know how to turn on an iPhone let alone tell if its been jailbroken.

I know there are some good technicians but my last experience at the Apple store was one that involved watching a genius ask a manager for help because he wasn't sure what one of the ports on a MBP was. :rolleyes:

As usual, you're completely, 100% incorrect.

A DFU restore won't leave any traces behind (although a normal restore may.)
 
Quick Q

I haven't 'broke' my iphone out yet, but I am wondering if it is still possible to sync it once it is out of jail? (a.k.a.- Can I keep my jailbreaked iphone synced?)

See when you post something that contradicts the experience of a great number of people who are intimately familiar with something, you typically want to provide something to corroborate your story. Otherwise, some of us more skeptical folk might assume you're just making stuff up.
