Ok, I've read multiple different answers on multiple different sites so hopefully I can get a clear answer here.

Question #1

I've got a 3g iphone with the 2.2 firmware and want to jailbreak it. I also have a new aluminum unibody macbook (the standard one.) Well this originally presented a problem because of all the reports saying the phone was not recognized in DFU mode while trying to be jailbroken. I read today however that the issue is with the usb port so if you buy an external usb hub (like this right? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...b+hub&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218038120506 ) I will be able to jailbreak my phone using my own computer, correct? If not, I can just jailbreak on a friends computer from what I've read, but this will still mean my iphone will be synced with my itunes and contacts, etc. correct?

Question #2

This has to be simple, and I'm sure answered somewhere, but I'm in class trying to hurry and I'm also somewhat lazy lol so here goes. Do I have to do anything special in order to make sure all my contacts, calendar appts, etc. that are currently on my non-jailbroken phone will be synced with my phone once it is jailbroken? I don't really want to have to go back and enter 150+ contacts into my phone again!

Sorry for the long-winded post hopefully there won't be many more noob questions from me! :D

1. Yes.
2. Do you have MobileMe? If so, it will push down wirelessly. If not, if you restore your most current backup, they will come over. Which means I recommend doing a full sync, then trying to Jailbreak the device. :)

Thank you sir! I don't have mobile me so just to clarify, to make sure I don't lose my contacts and stuff, you're saying that I should sync my iphone (as it sits now stock) with my itunes one more time to make sure all my latest data is in itunes, so after it is jailbroken all that info will load back onto the phone? I guess I was thinking that if I jailbreak my phone it will erase all my info off my itunes, kind of like wiping the slate clean, and take all my info off, but I guess this is not the case?

Also, I guess you don't HAVE to use an external usb hub if I were to follow these steps in this post, correct?

Personally, I wouldn't follow those steps. With out even clicking on it I assume it's a way to put the 10.5.5 USB drivers on your 10.5.6 machine. I've read of folks having issues and since a hub is a decent work around, I'd go for that option. Nothing wrong with extra USB ports anyway. :)

Why would jailbreaking your phone wipe anything in iTunes? Just make sure when you jailbreak to use Expert mode in Pwnage, uncheck the Activate checkbox, make your partition 1000MB and go. When you plug phone back in it'll ask to set up as new or to restore from backup. To clarify, if all your contacts are in Addressbook, and you set iTunes to sync it with your iPhone, it will put all your contacts in your iPhone. Apologies for any confusion, the backup will restore settings, SMS messages, etc. :)

It will also restore any saved apps/games and settings. The only thing it won't restore is any jailbroken apps and settings. Not that it matters at the moment as you can't jailbreak 2.2.1 yet.

No apologies necessary, I'm just trying to be extra cautious so I don't have to end up posting a "wtf omgz my iphone is a paperweight now!11!!" threads lol I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to actually do anything besides sync up my latest contacts, etc. with itunes like normal in order to have it put back on my phone after jailbreaking. Thanks for the heads up on the problems installing that package I posted, I'd rather spend <$10 and run into no problems than save a few bucks and get a big headache....and like you said, more usb ports never hurt anyone! Hopefully by tonight I'll have a newly jailbroken phone!

Is there any real difference between using either quickpwn or pwnage tool to jailbreak your phone?

Pwnage Tool gives you many more options, such as selecting a custom boot image
(kind of pointless now that LogoMe app is available in Cydia), selecting a custom
root partition size (default is 512 MB), the option of deselecting Installer app,
whether or not to update the base-band, whether or not to activate (off the top of my head).

There are some differences. For one, Pwnage allows much more customization in the jailbreaking process (as stated in the post above), but it requires a full restore.

For you though, I would recommend QuickPwn. It won't require you to restore your phone, thus you won't have to resync your phone or any of that. Using QuickPwn will eliminate the fear of losing your contacts, music, etc.

Like I said, for you I would recommend QuickPwn. Seeing as you are already on 2.2 (the latest firmware that is jailbreak-able as of this post), there is no real need to restore your phone, unless you want to up the root partition size to 1000MB (which you will HAVE to do if you use Pwnage)

Hope this helped!

Huh? The default size in Pwnage Tool is 512 MB - I bumped mine up to 750 MB...

what's the benefit of upping the partition size if you don't mind me asking?

Just install windows via boot camp and do it that way. I unlocked mine before traveling this way on my new unibody.

That seems like a big thing to do in comparison to just buy an external USB hub...plus don't you have to have a brand new never been registered copy of microsoft to do that?

hmm well I just tried to jailbreak my phone using quickpwn on a friend's PC and everything went fine until it rebooted with no signal/service, now I guess I'm just going to restore the phone through itunes and try again tomorrow lol

EDIT: oh well I'm just going to do a full restore in itunes with the new software and wait for the new jailbreak ish to come out and hopefully it will work then?

many newer monitors have USB ports, I connect the phone to the monitor to work around the DFU issue. Just in case you have one of those around, or may just go to a friend's house with one of these.

Just did it over and it seems to be working fine now :) I don't think the first time around itunes activated the phone before I used quickpwn. Thanks for all the help so far guys, now I've got a whole new world to explore!

This is awesome, being able to customize almost everything rules! Except for the fact that I'm staying up way late fiddling w/ my phone instead of sleeping like I should because I have an early class tomorrow lol

Jailbroken iphone won't sync calendar

I have no idea how to fix this. Any thoughts are welcomed.
