I spent the whole day trying to get this working, reading threads, trying new software and solutions and still can't get anywhere.
First off I downloaded pwnagetool and tried to jailbreak that way which either gives 1600 or 1604 errors when installing the custom ipsw.

So having read more it looked like lots of people were having this problem and the solution was to put the iPhone into DFU then use ireb to get past the errors.
I can get the phone into DFU, have installed ireb, but when i select the 3G in ireb is doesnt turn my screen white and doesn't crash ireb (which it is supposed to) so I can't progress...

I've tried all of this on my mac and on my PC and no joy.

My iPhone is new 3GS, 3.1.2, 16GB on O2 UK.

help anyone?

Thanks for the reply but i've already seen most of those links at some point today and they doesn't solve the problem that i'm explaining.

Infact if you look at the comments on the dev team site you posted you can see others struggling too, such as;
Infinite7
"I have the same problem New 32gb iphone 3gs modem 051107 (firmware 3.1.2 ,7D11) using Optus Australia, shipped yesterday. I have tried everything first using blackra1n but when I add the af2add..? it forces iphone into recovery mode and have to reset to factory default threw itunes... Used pwnage tool 3.1.4 goes into recovery mode fine then after restoed screen goes blank and my iphone popped up in itunes again saying it was in recovery mode. I cannot turn on iphone, so I restore again to factory default using itunes, I have restored my phone around 30-40 times trying everything.

And it is so annoying watching all these videos of people with iphone 3gs firmware 3.1.2 that show no problems, I have done everything + more with no success, is there any one out there who can solve this problem...."

If it is a new 3GS, does it have the new bootrom which requires a tethered jailbreak every time it is turned off or restarted ?

If this is indeed a brand new iPhone 3GS, you probably have the new iBoot which unfortunately cannot be jailbroken with the current tools.

Btw, I don't consider a tethered option to be viable. :)

You missed my edit above. :)

You may not consider it "viable," but that doesn't make it not a jailbreak. I frequently go days without rebooting my iPhone, and I'm never far from a computer for long. If I weren't fortunate enough to have purchased my phone back in August, I'd be thankful for a tethered jailbreak.

Well, since a jailbroken phone may not function as intended on certain occasions, a reboot is usually needed. Not everyone can 1. Bring their machine with them at all times or 2. Has a portable machine, i'd say it sort of defeats the purpose of havig a mobile device. :)

Nothing you say makes it not a jailbreak. You keep telling people that their phones can't be jailbroken, and it's just not true. You may not like the fact that it's tethered, but it *is* a jailbreak.

True, but nothing you say makes it worth while and viable for everyday usage. :)

iReb is only for 2G or 3G iphones - the only thing it does for 3GS is grab the SHSH file for future downgrading back to 3.1.2..

yea its brand new so looks like i'm stuck until some new pwnage software is released.

while trying 101 different things yesterday I did try blackra1n which did work.
So yes, I could have jailbroken it but i'd rather not if it means I would need my computer to boot each time. I don't really know who would want that? eg. If i'm away for a weekend and battery goes before i get to power im pooped!

I'll keep my eyes open for the next dev release.
cheers

Apparently after week 40 or 41, a new iBoot version was loaded during manufacturing that apparently creates problems when wanting to jailbreak.

Jest check my serial number (digital 4 &5) an it shows that mine was made in week 45. it all makes sense now.

It's called a tethered jailbreak. There is no fix for it as this thread states.

There is a thread here with lots of info (Something like the Official Tethered Jailbreak FAQ)
