I have done a ton of research on jailbreaking, and i have finally decided to do it.

But I seem to be missing one of them ost important pieces of information. Where to start.

As a PC user using an iphone 3gs with the newer bootrom, (357.5.2 i believe?) I realise I'll be doing a tether jailbreak. I don't know which program to use to achieve this break though. If anyone has a guide they can link, or the site to the DL and a basic tutorial, it would be greatly appriciated.

Any aditional info you guys may have on jailbreaking would be appriciated as well.

And, just as a side question, as long as i restore as a new phone, there is no traces of Jailbreaking right? I don't want to be left without waranty if anything happens.

Thanks a lot. :)

First of all, restoring you phone will rid you of any signs of jailbreaking. Just make sure you restore and then restore from backup. There's an option when you right-click on the iPhone icon in iTunes that lets you "restore from backup" and that will leave all jailbreak mods in place.

Now, where to start. Blackra1n.com. Click on the big Windows icon and let it do it's thing. Once that finishes and your phone reboots, find the blackra1n icon on your phone and open it, select Cydia when it asks you what you want to install and hit the button at the bottom (don't remember what it is).

That's it! Be sure to check out the themes and lockinfo threads here in the hacks section.

Apparently you didn't do quite enough reading if you had to ask how/what to use to JB the new Bootrom.

Go to iClarified or Hackintosh and get a tutorial for Blackra1n for 3GS with new bootrom.

Good Luck.

I know to use blacka1n but I wanted to hear from other people what they though. I read it off of another site, in a blog type format. I wanted to hear from other people who have jailbroken.

Also, I know i need to change some password, but what password is it?

If you install SSH (and you'll want to) it is highly recommended that you change the "root" and "mobile" passwords from "alpine" to something different. You'll find plenty of instruction here or on iClarified

Is there anything I should do before I JB it? I'm about to do it but i don't know if i should backup first?

It's always a good idea to backup your phone before doing anything major. Other than that, just remember that you will have to run blackra1n twice initially: once to jailbreak and again to boot your phone.

So i think i messed up. It said in itunes that it noticed an iphone in recovery mode, and my iphone was showing the connect to itunes. So i closed blackrain, and now I'm restoring. How do i restore from a backup though? Becasue currently im restoring from factory settings.

You should not have restored. You should have run blackra1n again. When you've got it restored, try again. This time make sure that iTunes is closed, and after your run blackra1n the first time, run it again to boot your phone.

Am I able to go back to my old settings on my phone though? Can i still recover my old contact list? It didn't ask me what backup to restore with. It's downloading an update now.

Man, I feel so stupid lol. I read so much but still know so little.

Nevermind. It's restored to the way it was. I'll try again tomorrow amd hopefully jailbreak it properly. :D

Thanks for the help guys. :)

Did you ever get a tutorial as I recommended ?

A step by step guide would of saved you a restore & re-JB

I followed a guide. My BlackRa1n stayed on the "checking for product" or whatever that screen is called for a long time and i thought it stopped working.

The place to begin is in iTunes. Back up your phone before doing anything.

With my 3G, I had good luck with blackra1n.com. But just jailbreak, don't unlock unless you have a reason to.

Once jailbroken, click the Blackra1n icon on your iPhone and install Cydia. That's the repo for software goodies. From Cydia, Backgrounder is a must, and SBSettings is useful. I haven't found a whole lot else worth jailbreaking for, frankly.

As to iPhones saying it's discovered a phone in recovery mode during the jailbreak-- just leave it alone. It's part of the process. Don't touch anything, it'll be over in a couple of minutes.

question on the back up, once I back up do I need to move this file? Or once I jailbreak is it that i shoudn't back up my phone at that point? I don't want to write over the pre-jailbreak back up.

OP has a 3GS with new bootrom (in the initial post). OP has tethered jailbreak, so OP has to re-run Blackra1n to reboot the phone after the initial jailbreak procedure.
