Hi, I'm in the UK and have an iPhone which is activated on the the O2 network with one of the iPhone tariffs. Yesterday I unlocked my iphone in order to benefit from the third party applications etc. However I never unlocked the phone for it to be compatible with any other than the intended sim card.

After fooling around with 3rd party apps the novelty ran out and I missed my visual voicemail which is more beneficial to me than the provided apps. Therefore I restored my iPhone back to factory settings. The phone's just as it was when it came out the box. Except that I can no longer browse the web using safari unless I'm connected to a wifi spot. That is, I get this message : Cannot activate EDGE. You're not subscribed to the EDGE network.

Furthermore my visual voicemail won't work. I cannot use google maps (which is very useful for me!) or any other application that requires 'internet' unless I'm connected via wifi.

Should I contact O2? I'm scared they cannot help and will know that I unlocked my phone. Please reply. Any help will do, especially if you've been in this situation and have rectified it!

Just to assure you, I don't think you're in a big problem here. (just feeling inclined to assure u cuz you sound a bit worried!) I don't think you've done anything irreversible.

now, lets wait for some real know-how ppl to come along...

I am

Yeah I am worried! lol. But thanks for somewhat reassuring me! I'm just annoyed at myself because I spent £269 on the iphone and £45 contract because of the visual voicemail and unlimited data downloads. Now I'm worried incase I've jeopardised that.

Please can anyone help?

how did you unlock it i would say turbosim right? if theres no sign of software hacking then just take it in and say this isnt working and since you have a O2 account they shouldnt say no

Unlocking method

I downgraded from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1. I did this by downloading the 1.1.1 restore software. Putting my iPhone into restore mode. Then using iTunes 7.4.2 (which I downgraded from 7.5) I used shift when clicking restore and selected the 1.1.1 file. It then preceded to restore my iphone and gave me the expected 1015 error. I then used independence and then jar (if i remember correctly) to jailbreak it. I downloaded installer and with that installed oktoprep. I then upgraded iTunes to 7.5 and upgraded my iphone to 1.1.2. Had some fun then decided I wanted visual voicemail again. It restored and it looks as if it isn't hacked but whether there are sings of it being hacked I do not know.

Please help!

Solution!

I found the solution to the problem....thanks to O2. Here it is for anyone else having this problem.

1. Make sure your WIFI is turned off.
2. Go to settings/ general/ reset / Reset Network Settings.
3. Confirm you want to reset settings.
4. Leave your iPhone for about 1 minute
5. When you go to use safari it should work using the O2 network or edge system.

With this voicemail should also automatically reconfigure. If not dial 1760 and it will tell you your messaging service has been switched off. Then dial 1750 and it shall tell you that it has been switched on. Your visual voicemail should now work again!

Knowing this information, I'm tempted to reunlock for some cool apps knowing that I can safely revert my iPhone back to 100% normal working order.

Might be worth trying those steps on an unlocked O2 iphone to see if you can gain access to the edge network and maybe even visual voicemail.
