I bought an iPhone 3g 8gb from someone and when I insert an AT&T sim it does not read it. However when I remove the sim tray the "No Sim installed" message pops up, so I assume it knows a sim card is inserted. This phone is jailbroken, V 2.2.1 and 02.30.03 baseband.

I'm doing a "restore" with iTunes but not sure if it'll work.

I looked up the serial number and it says:

"Our records indicate that your product is covered under Apple's Limited Warranty which is estimated to expire on September 05, 2009.

Your product is eligible for complimentary phone support which is estimated to expire on September 06, 2010."

I was just thinking of taking it to Apple after doing the restore but I have no receipt, will they give me a new one?

Appreciate any input.

Update: I did the restore and it's still not reading the sim.

I made an appointment with apple so hopefully they exchange it.

A restore would normally solve the problem, so it must be a hardware problem. I bet anything that they will give you a new phone on-the-spot. :)

Even without the receipt? I bought it from craigslist.

That's where I got mine too. It doesn't matter if you have a receipt or not, the warranty is tagged to the device. You need to restore it to stock firmware first regardless.

Ok thanks. Well like I mentioned in my first post, I clicked "restore" on iTunes, if that's what you mean by restoring it to stock firmware, (I'm kind of a noob so I'm just trying to clarify this), but now it won't let me go to the home screen because I need to insert the sim card, which it won't read.

Since the phone was jailbroken and I did the restore, is Cydia still installed? Just wondering since I can't get into the home screen and I've heard that warranty is void when it's jailbroken (?).

So apparently it works. Turns out that when you insert your sim you have to connect it to iTunes so the sim "activates" with AT&T
