Jailbroken iphone 3gs dropped, display broken; Applecare Question

So I dropped my iphone 3gs (that is jailbroken) and the display now is all white except for the very top of the screen. It looks terrible, but the funny thing is the phone still works completely (obviously can't text/games/web and all that cool jazz). Now I have applecare, but obviously jailbreaking the phone would void it... Should I just 'unjailbreak' it and go to an applestore, or will they have some way of being able to see that it was jailbroken. Any experience with these things?

Also, will applecare even cover the ruined display? The only reason I ask is because i've had terrible experience with applecare on my laptop and I heard somewhere that any problems that happen resulting from yourself aren't covered even with applecare.

Go ahead and restore the phone then bring it in to Apple. I've heard (and seen) some pretty ugly phones getting replaced. Don't worry about getting a refurb as it will probably increase your chances of getting a rejailbreakable iphone.
 
Yea I suppose I'll just reformat it and hope for the best that apple won't know it was jailbroken :\

restoring the phone removes the jailbreak. they will have no idea.

also, they aren't going to fix your broken screen anyway. applecare doesnt cover accidental damage

sori, coz I am new here, so how do you restore jailbroken iphone ? Can you pls explain me step by step ? since I am totally new with apple, there terms that i couldnt understand such as : S H , DFU ...

Or, you could plug it into iTunes and hit the restore button (too easy)
 
Are you certain Applecare won't cover this (why am I not surprised)? The phone dropped very close to the ground and this happened, it may have been accidental but I even had casing over the phone when it happened.

If this is true it's absolutely insane. Can anyone chime in who's had a similar experience?

You only need to look at Section B: "Limitations"


Apple has never covered accidental damage. Not on laptops, desktops, iPods or iPhones.

It's insane that companies don't usually cover people breaking their products? I'm not sure what world you've been living in, but I can't think of anything I own that I can break and have it replaced.
 
This is kind of unrelated (ranting) but my prior experience with Applecare has been terrible. I brought in my computer (just over a year old) which I noticed had terrible battery life. They took out my battery and plugged into some machine connected to a screen which in massive red letters read 'BAD!'. I assumed that this declared my mbp's battery defective (I mean it had only been 14 months), but they made me pay like $250 for a brand new battery even though I had the applecare protection plan. This wasn't accidental, this wasn't misuse, this was just use. I really hope I'm not gonna have to shell out another couple hundred bucks to get this fixed when I've had this for less than a year.

I guess I'll just go in and see what they say. I probably won't tell them I dropped it though...

Yea, just tell them it was in your back pocket and you sat down. That oughta do it ??? :rolleyes:

If you want unnecessary roughness coverage get a personal articles policy thru your homeowner's insurance.

For the record I went today and told them I had no idea how it happened and they said it was covered and fixed in about 15 minutes behind the genius bar... $0 spent

WHAT! a very similar situation happened to me in september and i paid the 200 plus tax.

Well basically I went in preparing for war. I would rather just use my completely damaged phone for another year (when my contract renews) than pay $200 extra AFTER buying ****ing insurance (that I assumed) to cover such damages. So I was prepared/expecting to flip out if they said they were charging me.

BTW. For those of you saying this is an unreasonable reaction, you either have alot of money or are extreme apple fanboys. When I spent the $70 extra for applecare I expected to get INSURANCE that would COVER ANY PROBLEMS I had with the phone. How is that unreasonable? Verizon switched out my broken phones. Accidents and mistakes are inevitable, and that's what I thought insurance was for preventing. Internal malfunctions and problems not coming directly from the user should always be covered regardless.

Anyways I went in and told them that I had no idea what happened, and he checked it out and because the glass screen wasn't broken and just the lcd, he declared it as a 'pressure' break that could be covered by my warranty. So I basically GOT really lucky. Applecare's really a scam though, if there were a crack on the screen I probably would have to pay the $200.

$250 for a MBP battery replacement under AppleCare?? They cost, like, $120 for the old models, and I don't think Apple's replacement program for the unibody models even costs $200. What the heck happened in your situation??

My bad, I'm not sure exactly how much I paid but the fact that I needed to pay at all angered me..

So, you left a few facts out ... if the glass is not broken, then sure they will say the LCD cracked from pressure....that's likely what actually happened.
