Engadgetmobile.com is claiming that no 2G phones were sold in Japan in January so.....

When is Japan getting the iPhone and does that mean the iPhone will have to be 3G in Japan?

Just a thought but it would seem so to me :p

Considering EDGE data makes the iPhone a 2.5G device, I'm not sure if I see the significance. Or did you just want to have your turn at the "OMG 3G IPHONE" trough?

If you wouldn't mind reading the iPhone FAQ in the Guides, you would see that the current iPhone (GSM 2.5G) is not compatible with the networks in Japan because they have already phased out GSM 2G, they have been using 3G system for a couple of years and had no need to keep the 2G around. As a result, for the iPhone to be launched in Japan it will have to be GSM 3G (UTMS or FOMA).

It's no surprise that a 3G iPhone is coming eventually. This was never really the issue. The issue has always been when.
