iPad Pro Jason Snell takes Apple to task for lack of pro apps on iPad Pro

I totally agree - if for no other reason than to give people one less reason to hate on iOS saying it’s not capable. Apple SHOULD have more full-featured apps - perhaps even a “full” version of iTunes, though I would like to see Final Cut X and Logic first.

Just listened to it. Lots of good points. I think Apple recognized this a while back, and then took a look at the bigger picture, and made a decision. I think that decision is they headed down the path of unifying AppKit and UIKit.

They hinted at that with iOS apps coming to the Mac with Marzipan and doing this with their own apps such as the Home and News apps on the Mac, but I think they will also allow developers to work on Mac software and iOS software simultaneously—even for professional level apps. They will have the same code base but a different way of presenting the UI. I think most newer developers already do this to a certain extent, but this will tie them even more closely together and reduce the work load to support an app on two different platforms. Maybe they could even allow cross platform purchases? In this way Apple will make their lives easier by not having to maintain multiple versions of FCX and Logic, but also entice more professional app developers to put in a little extra work to optimize their app for the iPad. I think that combined with other UI and system level improvements for iPad Pro in iOS 13 will make for a compelling system to get actual work done. I just think it is taking Apple longer than expected to pull it all off, but the hardware is now in place and ready for the big update next year. Or so I can hope!

I wouldn’t count on anything big for iOS 13 from Apple on this front (especially any kind of separation between phone and table). I think a lot of the rumors and expectations for changes in iOS 12 were more wishful thinking than actual Apple developments. I have head about these so-called improvements since iOS 7 and they’re always “pushed back to the next iOS”.

The pattern has been pretty clear so far:
iOS 9: First iPad focused release with Split Screen
iOS 11: A reimagining of split screen implementation with drag and drop (another huge iPad release)

Looking at historical data it would appear Apple is striving for every 2 years to make some big in roads on iPad features. It would be concerning if this stuff waited until iOS 14.

Agree entirely. They give the new iPad they umph, but if they released Final cut pro and Logic Pro at the time of release of the new iPad, it would have definitely given a better impression as a more professional tool for a broader audience. The Photoshop demo was definitely a big one, but its strange that Apple hasnt done the same with their own software. Then again, if they do this, why would professionals then buy macs in the future?
 
I agree with Jason as well. If Apple is going to market the iPad Pro as a workstation-class device, they need to bring their pro apps to the platform.

And when the Pro first launched they had Microsoft on stage showing off Office. According to Apple’s executive page Eddy Cue still has ownership of Apple’s pro applications. Perhaps those should be moved under Schiller as well. I’m not saying Fedeighi because he seems to have all he can handle with the operating systems.

I guess my preference would be for Apple to use its resources to optimize the hardware and the operating system and make them as capable as possible, and leave it to software developers to make the pro apps. Sure, Apple should make and include basic apps like the iWork suite, Apple Mail, Calendar, Reminders, etc. so that people can use the iPad right out of the box, but as I see it, developers dedicated to pro apps (Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) are in a much better position to serve that community of users than Apple is IMHO.

To be fair though, Microsoft still hasnt released a full version of the office apps. I have yet to see the equation builder tool (which as an engineer, I use often on my analysis reports):

Top of my wish list would be a full version of Adobe Acrobat Pro. Adobe’s iOS Acrobat app is pretty useless — doesn’t even allow you to add bookmarks. PDF Expert is pretty good, but it lacks some of the features of the full Adobe desktop product — such as OCR. And even PDF Expert’s iOS app does not include all the features of its desktop one. If Acrobat DC Pro were to come to the iPad Pro, I could make that my only device. As it is, I can’t. (I know there are some quite good online PDF tools, such as Sedja — but they have their limitations if you work with large PDFs, even on the paid versions.)

Well I’m not saying Apple should build new pro apps but they ones they’ve already got should be best in class on iPad. Unless you’re suggesting Apple should discontinue FCPX and Logic?

This type of application feature should be obsolete. You should only have to install a custom equation soft keyboard to be able to do this in any text input in any app.

No, not suggesting that. I agree, those are great apps for pros and many pros use them. My point was that like all companies, Apple has limited resources. It will put those resources to use as it sees fit from a business perspective, and my guess is that pro app software, even though it is used by many, is simply not high on the list right now. Not trying to be pessimistic, and I would hate to see FCPX and Logic go the way of Aperture, but Apple is spread pretty thin right now with all the obligations in iPhones, services, etc. I would not be surprised to see the pro apps suffer for a bit.

But at least Apple included support for LaTeX in their apps. That could be a reason to change to iWorks (I use Keynote for that reason).
 
Something I would wonder: how would apple store pricing be for final cut for iPad. Would we see Mac prices? Subscription? What

I'm not convinced MS will ever release such a full version for ipad. that's like saying 'don't by a surface anymore'
 
Apple themselves know that iPad Pro is NOT a Pro device. But Pro is just a pure misleading advertising moniker. It lures some gullible first timers who get attracted to all things Pro and want to jump into world of content creation.

iPad... how much Pro Apple touts is just a dumb glorified iPhone and is damn good for pure content consumption.
 
Surely all this noise from the latest round of reviews will resonate with Apple? Amazing hardware but iOS and the lack of updated apps are severely hampering its capabilities.
