I was wondering if Apple is planning to include the Java 3D module in the future? It is bundled with Tiger, but the included version is very tired. Now that Java 3D is an open source project has anyone heard of new porting efforts on Apple's part to update Java 3D? I am developing a Scientific 3-D viewer window and would like to keep mac compatiblility, but would like to use the simple view graph model used by Java 3D.

Yes, Apple finally included it, but it doesn't matter as far as the future goes. From what I've seen, Sun has already downplayed Java 3D as long ago as Java 5 because they're replaced it with another imaging library.

Not replaced but down played.

From what I have found Java 3D is still under developement as a community project. It has not been replaced but a few other projects do have similar ability. The Java Advanced Imageing library is good for many issues, and the java open gl bindings (JOGL) are good for procedure based rendering. The Java 3D API now sets on top of JOGL on Mac OS X. I have been using the current build with no issues and find the implementation to be very smooth even with many items in the scene. It appears not be a big deal if Apple includes the functionality or not. The needed jars and nib files can be installed by a native installer with no issues or loaded by web start.
