I've resurrected one of my old 8,1 iMacs (C2D extreme 2.8, 6GB RAM). It's been merrily chugging along on Snow Leopard but has started running into apps it can no longer use, so I upgraded to El Capitan. Runs a bit slower, but maybe that's teething troubles to start. However. it will now not run any Adobe Apps (CS5.5). It needs Java 6. Apple don't appear to have a link and from somewhere, I managed to download JavaForOSX2014-001. however, installing it goes through the process before it ultimately tells me it can't be installed as a newer version is already running. Is there something I need to delete from somewhere? Thanks.

I doubt java 6 would run on el capital considering it's ancient. Does jdk 7 or jdk 8 not work? JVM should be backwards compatible for the most part, although if they're doing crazy runtime introspection things I suppose there's a chance of breakage.

Apparently, the Adobe apps only run using v6. Wish I'd known that before upgrading!

See this:

"Can I restore Apple Java 6 after uninstalling Oracle Java?
Yes, see the instructions on the Apple website Restore Apple Java 6. If you have JDK 7 or later versions installed on your system and you want to restore Apple Java 6, then those JDK versions need to be uninstalled first. See the instructions to Uninstall JDK."

Well, did it and - how easy was that in the end!!! I followed the instructions here -
- and it seems my biggest mistake was using Safari! Using Chrome, it was merely a matter of downloading the legacy file, installing it and hey presto! All running nicely again. Thanks for your help.

Be forewarned that if you ever erase your drive and attempt to reinstall your CS suite from disk in the future, it will fail. The licensing servers no longer exist and the disks will attempt to contact the servers. I ran into this after doing a clean install of Mojave a while back. So long as you never have to reinstall from disk, it should run as long as your machine will run. CS 6 suite.
