Java control panel errors after switching computers using Migration Assistant

I used Migration Assistant to move my Mac mini M1 to a Mac Studio. Since doing so, when I open the Java control panel and click the update button, it has an endless spinning circle.

I'm assuming this became corrupt during the migration. Does anyone know of a way to repair this without uninstalling/reinstalling it?

This also happened to my friend when we migrated his stuff from an Intel Mac mini to a new Mac mini M1.

On another note, is Java 7 even beneficial over what Apple provides (Java SE 6)?

We're at Java 18 now.
I don't know about 7, it will probably never work on Silicon.
Most Java software requires 8 anyway, and some even 11.

Where do you install that? Oracle only lists Java 8. I hate Oracle anyhow.

I'm (probably) off-base here, but I'm under the impression that one needs to install the JDK these days.

There is M MacOS binaries for that.

No guarantees that that will work with whatever Java apps/clients you are running.

Java is open source now, so you can get a distribution from different places. Most only provide the entire JDK.
My go-to is the Eclipse Foundation: https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases

The Java control panel is no longer present in modern distributions (IDK if some still has it), you can just get rid of it. Maybe you already have a newer Java, try java --version in a terminal, and check /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines.

But the real question is: do you have any Java app?
If you don't, don't bother installing it. If you do, it's strange you were still using Java 7, you may want to check for updates of the apps.

On more serious note, get the OpenJDK. What do you need Java for?

Are you sure you even need Java at this point? Most people have no use for it whatsoever anymore, and generally the people who do use Java will know why it’s needed.

I think I may have needed it for an app that communicated with a WiFi SD card to download data periodically. I no longer use that app. I'm going to go without it for now. I should get a popup or error message if I need it.

Exactly. I would uninstall all of the Java remnants that migrated over and just wait to find out if some app needs it.
