'Jerky' playback on apple tv2

i have recently converted some mkv 720p files using handbrakes appletv2 setting and when i watch them on my tv the playback is a little bit 'jerky' i.e.not very smooth. if i watch the mkv file on my iMac I'm sure they play much smoother. anyone got any ideas? would apple tv3 play them better ?

How have you got your Apple TV connected to your network? Is it through wifi or ethernet? If its wifi, I'd try connecting an ethernet cable and see if it improves playback.

thanks but i have tried using ethernet and it makes no difference to using wifi.

the refresh rate that you have set your atv to output probably doesn't match the contents fps/refresh rate.

Experiment with the refresh rate on the TV this could help a lot depends on the TV. Do a forum search there are several threads about this. From what I understand this is not a a handbreak problem. I adjusted my TV and I would say about 95 percent of the issue went away.

I would also suggest using Video Monkey to encode one of the videos and see if you still get the same problem. Its a free program and using the Apple TV2 setting on it, gives excellent results for 720p video. I prefer that to Handbrake.

Seems to be a issue with Apple TV's in the UK to be honest. No matter how I encode stuff panning shots will appear to be a bit jerky.

it's due to the fact that a lot of media is encoded at 24 frames/sec (fps) while the aTV outputs 30 or 60 fps (can't remember which, but it doesn't do 24), it has to do with adding the frames to fill in the missing ones.

it's why you'll see 240 fps (or hertz) advertised on newer TVs, since 240 is evenly divisible by 24, 30 and 60 it doesn't have to make up or skip frames so them all play back smoothly.
