So JetBlue (the BEST airline, IMHO) is starting a wifi network in the air program. Essentially, free wifi access that is limited to yahoo email and blackberry usage. However, I went to the website to read up and it specifically states the iPhone can not be used since there is no way to switch off the cellular antenna while leaving the wifi active.

So, my question is: is this a hardware limitation or can a future firmware upgrade change this?

No, its not a hardware limitation since you can turn off the WiFi and still have cellular.

What you can do is just turn off the cellular as you can with the WiFi.

However, you can take out the Sim card which would do the trick.

Take out the sim card would work. There is also an app that allows you to turn on/off

Antenna
Edge
Wifi
SSH

Forgot what's it's called right now.
