So Apple is a jewellery company now? What a load of crap that is. I really hope this fails fast so they can concentrate on computers again. I know I know. It's never going to happen.

The apple watch is a computer, i.e., it has a processor, GPU, ram, runs apps etc.

Don't want the watch, don't buy it. It seems many people are interested in it.

I wonder if the same thing was said when Apple rolled out the iPod and look what happened there.

No the same this wasn't said because an iPod isn't jewellery, even if you get it plated in gold.

And yes. I saw what happened there. Apple made a tonne of cash. Was that your point?

Apple is no longer what you would call a 'Computer Company' as many old school types would like them to be.

They are not interested in getting the public interested in the fastest desktop machine.
They can't win that battle, never have done, never will. it's a lost race for them.

They are concentrating on the area now that they can win, or stay near the top in, the mobile fashion electronics industry.

Being cool with the kids, appealing to the young generation with cash to waste.
Sure they will knock up the mac pro, again designed to look cool above all else, but that's only really been built for one task and if that's not your task they screw you.

Apple could in an instant make was many old school people want, and ask for, but they won't they are not interested and that's not the direction they are going.

If you like 'Proper' computers to do something with, be that entertainment or productivity/business, then do what the vast majority of the world have done for years and still does today. Use a PC.

My point is that apple produced a non computer product in the iPod and was successful. Now with the watch, they are doing the same thing. You may not like it, but that doesn't mean everyone will hate it.

Apple dropped "Computer" from their official name years ago. I see no return to them focusing more time, money and effort on desktop/laptops but rather branching out into other products and services.

The A Watch is not jewellery in itself, it's a computer. It's the tacky gold version that's aiming to be jewellery. Bad step for the brand.

...but the iPod isn't a computer either. There were lots of complaints just like yours except change jewelry to consumer electronics. 'So Apple is a consumer electronics company now?' Most saw this an even more futile move than the aWatch because consumer electronics industry is cut throat with tremendous competition and razor thin profit margins.

The fashion jewelry industry on the other hand has super high profit margins and people willing to pay for prestige, especially if it comes with a desirable functionality. Apple has the design chops and quality reputation to infiltrate, disrupt and dominate this market.

You can also look at it this way (my numbers are of course pulled out of my but and my opinion are opinions:eek: )

Edition: Fashion/Jewelry with a prestige/celebrity factor and about +/-$5000 with a HUGE profit margin (5% of sales)

Watch: Fashion with a status factor at about +/- $1000 with a HIGH profit margin (20% of sales)

Sport: Pragmatic/utilitarian that still gives a style factor >$349 (75% of sales)

People laughed when Apple entered the MP3 player market. Look where it is.

People laughed when Apple entered the cell phone market. Look where it is.

People laughed when Apple entered the tablet market. Look where it is.

Now that people like the OP are laughing that Apple is entering the high-end wearable market, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Apple has made consumer electronics into jewellery, almost on accident. I don't think any other single brand comes close to Apple as a fashion statement. Whether you intend it or not, buying Apple "says something" about you.

Why wouldn't they make a watch?
