i have a 20gig 4th gen ipod.. and a friend of mine has a 4gig 1st gen ipod... can they be used for jogging with an arm band? or just not recommended at all because of the HD's?

Get a Shuffle. They're great for running. They hold plenty of songs for the entire run. I don't dare take my 20 gig running because of the hard drive and I'm afraid of dropping it. Why would I need to take 20 gigs of music with me anyway when I run?

Yes, they can be used for jogging... hence the 25 minutes of skip protection. I'm not sure how well a full size iPod would work on an arm band, but I have seen many people either holding them or clipping to their waistband. That said, of course the mini or shuffle would be a bit easier for working out.

Have any of you seen the first ads for the original Ipod, with the guy dancing around like a freak?

The iPod's intended use was for active people. The only thing you should worry about is dropping your iPod onto something hard, or in front of a moving car. As long as you are not purposely shaking your ipod like a bottle of salad dressing during your entire jog, you should be fine.

Remember the Ipod uses the disk to queue up songs into memory, then it stops the disks, parks the heads, and plays songs directly off of the non moving memory chips (just like a shuffle).

iPod shuffle or iPod mini. But not the full size iPods, they are too big, and expensive. I tried jogging with my 2G 20GB iPod, but my shorts kept falling to my knees.

Did anyone see you

Yeah, my 15g has to stay in my hands, otherwise I could see that happen to me. I actually like to MTN bike, so if I have good pockets or a belt band, I am good to go. Hey if I could ride with a Pioneer CD player, this iPod is a great fit when compared to that!! :)

But from experience, cue up the songs that you plan to listen to on your run, start them playing as you warm up and don't skip forward/backwards once you start running or you'll lose the buffer and it will skip like crazy.

I'd go with those who are recommending the Shuffle for running with.

I use a arm band on my 2o gig. Its a bit weird at first but you do get use to it. If your a heavy sweater watch out, i sweat to much and the sweat manges to get through the sweat proof cloth. I would however recommend buying a shuffle for those occasions if you can afford. The price of my arm band was half of the 512mb shuffle.

Do not believe anyone that tells you the hard drive iPods are not for jogging. I jog one hour every day and I use a 40 GB iPod with an XtremMac Sportwrap. The iPod has performed very well and the only times I have had any problems with it were on particularly hot days in summer when it crashed. Having said that, I do live in Queensland, Australia and the climate here is very hot and humid in that season.

Personally I think it is a waste of money to buy an iPod Shuffle if you allready own another iPod. Better spend it on shorts that don't drop when you are jogging. ;)

Yeah lol Queensland does boil thats part of my sweating problem.

The ipod what skip at all and plays the same with no loss what so ever.

I just want to chime in that I have done extensive distance running, including a marathon, with an iPod (3G/15GB) holding it in my hand, not on a band or clip). I have run for a lot longer than one hour on many occasions without running into skip issues.

I notice that it works alot better with an armband then a waist clip. Something to do with the way you move. When I clip it on my waist it starts skipping after the 25 min buffer is up. I then moved to an arm band and could run well over an hour with no problems at all.

I do agree that if you run alot a Shuffle is a good investment. I have had mine for about 2 weeks and I love it! It is perfect for running.

You ran a marathon with an iPod in your hand?! That must have got sweaty!

Then again I know plenty of people that work out with iPods in their hand. Must be a preference thing, personally I can't stand it!

i run using an armband with my 4g 40gig and have had no problems....it is overkill carrying 2 weeks worth of music for a 45 minute run but until i get a shuffle thats the situation. i now use sony mdr-ex71 earbuds because the stock apple jobbies wouldn't stay in place. the only downside is they completey block out any external sounds such as car horns, bikers and muggers...

LOL, it accumulated so much salt on the outside that I had to wipe it down around mile 23 to get the scrollwheel to work well enough to start a new playlist. :D But no water intrusion, no issues, cleaned up just fine.

interesting!!

Thanks Guys...

what are some armband recommendations out there? for a 20 gig and a 4gig.

nice

Have you condsidered a drawstring or elastic waistband perhaps? ;)

I bought a shuffle just for running.

I couldn't even conceive of running with a full-size iPod anymore. I never had skip problems, personally.
