Someone really needs to put his ego in check. :D

http://archive.aweber.com/michaelheppell1/II30X/h/Hanging_Out_With_Sir_Jony.htm

I’d just bought a new iPhone 6, which was in my pocket, (along with a fine-tipped black Sharpie pen).

The request was simple, ‘Sir Jony, I’m a big Apple fan. I’ve just bought a new iPhone and was hoping you would be kind enough to sign it?’

Guess what he said..?

‘No…’

Well, you could have knocked me down with an Android. And I would have been gutted, had it not been for the brilliant sentence which followed.

‘No Michael, I’d rather not. Here’s why. There were over two thousand people involved with the creation of the iPhone. It would be wrong for me to put my name on something which is such a massive team effort.’

Wow! If he’d left it at that I would still have been a tad disappointed but I would have understood his reasoning. But then this happened…

Jony added, ‘But what I can do is draw a picture on the back for you - if you’d like me to?’

YES! I’d love that! I had to stop myself from screaming as he proceeded to customise my iPhone with a quirky one-off cartoon.

Thanks for sharing. It is a very interesting story. I enjoyed it.
Thought provoking. I still can not decide whether he was modest or simply pragmatic in a way. Just imagine how much an iPhone 6 with Jony Ive's signature would cost.
Thanks again for the story.

Took a selfie with the guy too.

This is one thing I really like about Tim Cook's Apple. Executives are more approachable. At WWDC Craig and Jony took lots of selfies with attendees. And just the other day I saw a photo on Twitter of someone who met Eddy Cue at the Boston Apple store and got a selfie with him. I sense very little ego at all from Tim and his executive team.

Makes me question who's ego needs to be put in check.

;)

By reading the title of your post I really thought 'what a jerk, what's the story behind this?' But after reading the rest of the post I really enjoy the way he thinks and I took my thoughts back.

My ego in check comment was sarcastic of course. :)

Jobs would have just signed the freaking phone instead of giving some kumbaya reason not to.

I think he didn't sign it cause he thought the guy would sell the phone for 1M$ just cause it has Jony Ive's signature on the back.

Interesting story. I suppose he's giving the other people who worked on the phone their respect. Since he did do something on the back of the phone, it wasn't like he was being a jerk or anything. He did accommodate the author in some fashion
