Journaled HFS+ NAS 2011

OK, time to ask again.

Is there any good NAS accepting internal journaled HFS+ SATA disks by now?

It should also have a port for direct attachment for disk repair. No funny RAID stuff that can't be handled by DiskWarrior.

Preferably one that can be bought without disks.

Apple does not qualify.

Airport Extreme. Doesn't come with a disk. Supports HFS+. Unlike the Time Capsule, you can connect your hard drive to a Mac via USB.

Seriously, though, HFS+ is a hack, and Apple knows it. It was introduced in Mac OS 8.1, and it was never intended to be used for as long as it has been. Why do you think they tried to put UFS in 10.0 and ZFS into Leopard? From what I've read, ZFS would be a much better file system to be interested in.

Except HFS+ today wouldn't recognize itself if it saw its own picture from the 8.1 days. As long as Apple keeps improving it, it'll keep chugging, but I do agree that it either needs an overhaul, or be replaced. Filesystems have a lot of potential, most of which isn't realized with HFS+. It's unfortunate what happened to Apple's attempt at porting ZFS. We can only hope they'll have a try at that again someday.

Yes, and no. Yes, a lot of cool stuff has been added, but your Snow Leopard drive will still mount on an 8.1 machine. The journal will be reset, the file system event record for time machine will be reset, your spotlight database will likely need to be recreated, and you won't be able to read any files compressed for Snow Leopard, but otherwise, you'll be able to get to your files. Oh wait... no you won't... unless you're using an Apple Partition Map instead of GUID Partition Table (which technically has very little to do with HFS+ itself)... It's both cool and sad at the same time.

Last rumors I heard hinted that since the ZFS licensing fell through, Apple's working internally on their own new file system, which is almost a given, really.

Well, if one wants to choose something that needs a bit of fiddling and bug chasing and tweaking... I am running an HP Microserver N36L with 8TB of disks and FreeNAS 8 for time machine backups. It's not easy like Apple stuff. Nice hardware with ZFS and support for AFS. Xbench says it reads faster over the network that my MBP1,1's internal drive (WD Scorpio black 320). ZFS write speed is a little slow, but robust.

There are other options for NAS software which may perform better.
