Journaling HFS Question

I noticed in the Panther installer that when you opt to format the hard drive, it gives you the option of HFS Journaling. Do you have to format a Jaguar HFS drive to enable journaling?

Also... are there any real benefits of journaling? I've read up on a few...

go for journaled. you don't have to reformat your disk, you can turn on journaling on any hfs+ disk with 10.2.2 or later. journaling keeps a record of all files at all times and thus removes the necessity to run fsck at every reboot (resulting in faster boot times) by keeping the disk data from corrupting in the event of an improper power-down. it is said that in some instances journaling can cause a disk to be slower (although large write/rewrites are actually faster), but i have noticed no difference in speed between journaled and non-journaled.

Thanks for the response. I'll enable journaled when I get home tonight if its not already enabled by default.

Ummm... I can't find a way to enable it... I take that its enabled by default?

A quick search reveals that you do this:

% sudo diskutil enableJournal /

to enable it. If you don't understand that, ask.

Yes, that is for OS 10.2.

I figured that since it is a well advertised feature of Panther though, it would either be:

A) Enabled by default

B) Easier to access than the terminal.

Anyone have any thoughts?

In Panther it is enabled by default and can be enabled/disabled in the DiskUtility.
