I have a complete alphabet in seperate .jpgs and want to turn them into a whole font. I'm not a professional or serious designer, so a free program is what I'm looking for (I'm cheap, yeah). I don't even want to design new fonts, just turn my .jpg alphabet into a .ttf file. Any suggestions/experiences would be great, and thanks in advance?

The whole point of fonts being vector is as they're being used/typed, they can be increased or decreased without losing resolution. If you're using a jpg, this eliminates that whole idea and the resolution will look like crapola.

At the risk of responding to an old thread, AFAIK there are no free MacOS X-based apps to convert raster images into fonts. However, FontLab sells a commercial utility that will do the job. ScanFont is what you are looking for. Priced at $99.00 US, it is not free but it is much less expensive than FontLab's Fontograper ($349.00 US) or FontLab Studio 5 ($649.00 US).

Thank you.

Software developed with ESRI's ArcObjects and MapObjects engines require shape (*.shp) files. These can only contain points, lines, and polygons. They cannot contain text files. I am looking for a jpg font set so that I can use it in ESRI shape files. I want to apply labels to features on jpg aerial photos, convert these modified jpgs to shape files, and then use them as moving maps in our aircraft. The vector vs raster issue is not pertinent in this application because the size/resolution of the maps will be fixed. I'll size the fonts so that they are readable at the operating resolution of the avionics equipment.

Thanks again for the pointer

Looking for JPG alphabet

'm looking for a jpg alphabet for another use. I am translating MapInfo TAB (table files) into ESRI ArcGis SHP (shape files). The SHP specification does not include text, and therefore all of the text labels for my TAB maps are lost in the conversion to SHP. However, if I use jpg files instead of regular text, I can translate the information.
