With the new announcement/release of the M1 Macs, I've been debating ditching my 16" i9 2.3ghz, 32gb, 5500m 8gb, 1tb SSD and downsizing to a Pro 13" M1 16gb, 1TB SSD. I bought the 16" mainly for its DGPU and the extra screen real estate, thinking it wouldn't be that much heavier to carry, but I definitely miss the 13" size after using it for a while. The DGPU was mainly cause I wanted a Mac and the ability to do some light-medium gaming while away from the desk. But the i9/Radeon are just way too power consuming/loud to be an enjoyable experience. Second issue was Apple's drivers are terrible on Windows and third party drivers trigger game DRMs. So I've given up with that dream, and will be leaving the gaming to my Mac Pro 5,1.

So the goal is to sell my 16" on eBay at hopefully a decent price, more than enough to cover the 13" M1 16gb 1TB SSD. The only debate is whether 16gb will be enough. Activity monitor shows me using 13.39gbs at the moment, which maybe I'm crazy but seems abnormally high for just doing some web browsing in safari at the moment. I haven't wiped my OS in a bit so I'm gonna give that a go and see if there's an improvement.

I mainly just want a powerful/efficient machine that's lightweight, and the M1 13" seems to fit that bill.

Anyone else planning to downsize or jump to the M1 and stuck?

I’m switching from the 16” MacBook Pro to the new Air. I don’t play games anymore, so I don’t need the bigger GPU. The larger screen is a waste because I mostly use it in clamshell mode and plugged into an ultra wide monitor. I also use an iPad Pro as a laptop because it’s paired with a Smart Keyboard. I’m ditching both and moving to a single device. One less device to upgrade.

Well good luck. I’m planning to use my MBP16 for long time, but Apple Silicon MBP 16” when comes out may change my mind!

For now though... MBA M1 looks very promising...

if your machine is pretty recent, as your is, I’d really consider taking a hard pass on the first generation of these new macs. Apple Watch series 0, original iPad. Original iPhone. I suspect these machines will be obsolete by the end of the 2 year transition. This is just the first taste. Hold strong!

but, that’s just like, my opinion, man.

I’m somewhat concerned about planned obsolescence on this first gen product. But the performance level is so high that shouldn’t be necessary (considering lower performing Intel machines should be good for years and years of consumer use).

I'm pondering the same question with my MBP 16" 16gb i9 1TB 5500m/4gb , used for work with ext monitor dell u2720q

the 16" screen comes in handy as a second display (on a stand)

my main issue is fan noise;

my work software has known incompatibilities with Big Sur for now but I expect them to be resolved soon; I don't know if M1 would present further obstacles

I use Parallels for an infrequent game but I guess that shouldnt be a decisive factor

with new M1 laptops i'm craving the silence and also there's a bit of fear my MBP will lose all its value soon ... so a bit torn here, too

Perhaps it means those two ways aren't much different for now given the uncertainties/unknowns

I managed to sell my fully specced 2015 mbp for a good price, but I see others are already struggling now as the Market is getting flooded with used intel Macs. This MBA I have now blows the socks off my mbp. I was very lucky to sell it as quickly as I did.

Where are you seeing others ‘struggling’? I’m also about to sell my 16” in favour of the M1, but I’m not sure what you mean by this.

a few forum comments here and elsewhere have said they haven't had a lot of interest. I also noticed on gumtree and sphock in the uk where I sell my stuff, a lot more intel Macs appearing. I still think you can sell intel Macs, just the prices wont be as good as they may have been, but that all depends on people knowing about the M1. Im glad I sold mine quickly and for £800 , I was lucky.
